Hello

Im in the process of buying my first vintage fender amp and have got it down to two, a 61 Brownface Deluxe or a 64 blackface tremolux. Both in great condition. The 61 has the input transformer changed out so it can work in Europe (Mercury) and a Utah speaker. The Tremolux has the 2x10 with Oxford speakers.

I cant try either sadly so I need some help. I love that saggy (the saggier the better) blown out Neil Young sound but also like a nice full slightly crunchy clean sound. I mainly just record, no huge gigs or anything.

Can anyone of you guys help me out here, they both cost about the same and I simply cannot decide which to go for. I know I should try them out but I simply cant. Im sure both would be great however so I doubt I can make a huge mistake but any input from you guys would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a Blackface Tremolux, great amp but IMO with what you write and with no photo , I'll go for the Brownface Deluxe. Combo has more value than 2 pieces amp and more sough after.

You can't try them ! :( Post pictures

Not a certainty.

If the Tremolux is a matched set (head and speaker cab original to one another) it's probably an even-money bet......anywhere between $1600 and $1900 for both amps, contingent upon other conditions (cosmetics, functionality, factory accessories).

Yep, its a set on the Tremolux with original oxford speakers. How will I know if the set is matched though?

Both amps in great condition. The Tremolux has a new output transformer (Mercury) as the original one was showing signs of age (says the current owner), the original transformer is still with the amp though, he can send it.

The Deluxe has a new Input transformer so it can used in Europe, also a Mercury.

Do these amps sound very different? I guess they do.

Thanks

Did you see the circuit, inside the amps to say both are in great condition ?
Or just from outside ?
You'll use the amp in 240 volts wall outlets , you live in Europe ?

:)

Ive seen photos, yes.

Yep, I live in Germany, the Tremolux was an export model so its always been here, the Deluxe wasnt and so needed a new input transformer.

Oh, the Tremolux is from a private seller, the deluxe is from a shop who also sells vintage gear so. that could be the deal maker I think?

Ampwares site has model information. The book, "Fender Amps, the First Fifty Years," by Teagle & Sprung is also a good reference source for model specifics, esp tweed through late silverface eras.

Date codes for the Tremolux's head and speaker enclosure can be found ink-stamped within their respective cabinets. If they date within a few weeks of one another and the grill cloths of both pieces show similar aging and discoloration then they're likely matched (or nearly so). Vintage grill cloths look different depending upon how and where the amps were used. A studio piece will usually look much more pristine than a unit that was gigged in smoke-filled bars and saloons.

Given that neither amp is original I'd deem it mandatory to examine each one in person before considering a purchase. Detailed photos *might* prove useful but unless you are intimately familiar with this equipment it is very easy to get ripped off.

The amps will sound different because they are each designed around different circuits and use different speaker arrays. As well, the tremolo circuits of each bear little relationship to one another. The 6G3 Deluxe employs a simple oscillator while the AB763 Tremolux relies on an opto-isolator (like most blackfaces).

Photos! Yay, we love photos! Esp of vintage gear.

Also, the Tremolux runs 6L6GC tubes in the output stage. The Deluxe uses 6V6GT. And I'm curious about the tube driven oscillator-vibrato of the brownface 6G3. Must be close to the Princeton blackface ones, in tone. Which is a very good thing.

I have a Blonde transition era Tremolux. A very, very bitchin' amp, indeed. It's loaded with JBL E110 speakers. Very good, prolly one of the better sounding cabs I've experienced.

Yep, the speakers in the 2x10 have a date of the 31st week of 64 so they match..
