Perhaps Fender put it in this location so when it sat on an amp, the amp was plugged in to the unit the the unit was plugged into the wall.

I don't think so. Fender's AC convenience outlets were typically rated for 200 watts (the max draw that an outboard device could safely take from the socket). If used with a Showman, Dual Showman, or Twin Reverb, that rating would be exceeded by 60 watts.

I'm going to bypass the outlet. Here's what I think is correct. What do you think?

Yes, it's my unit. Obviously, I never used the spare outlet. The back cover has been on, for most of the unit's life.

Your posts and photo brought my attention to it. Yes, that wiring scheme is correct. [green attaching to bolt holding tranny to chassis].

If preserving the unit's originality is of any importance to you, you'll discard that idea.

Yeah, I'd keep it, too. Really, the socket is just a binding post for the outlet wire. Just don't use it. Keep the unit as stock as possible. This will keep resale value high. These units are going for quite a lot, nowadays.

Thank you guys so much for the help.

How's it look to you?

Success!

Thank you guys for all the help!
Just finished the installation and tested the unit. Sounds fantastic.

I have a very tiny, faint ground loop. Barely noticeable. I have a Big Shot ABY pedal that has a ground lift, isolation transformer, and phase switcher built in to it. I'm going to put that pedal in line between the reverb unit and my amp to see if I can lift the ground on one end of the cable to reduce the noise. I'll try the iso switch if that doesn't work.

If the ground lift on one end of the instrument cable works, I'll probably get a short cable and unsolder the shield from one end. That way I don't have to carry the extra pedal around.

Thanks again for the help!

P.S.
Convenience outlet intact...LOL

The standard cure is to use a 3-prong to 2-prong AC adaptor on the reverb cord. Keep the ground on the amp
I have observed many amps that use capacitor coupling for their ground path.
I tried it on a couple of reverb units with good sucess. It maintains a ground path for AC, but eliminates the loop. I used a .015/250VAC snubber cap for the job. Connect it between the green AC wire and ground.
Its safer than the adaptor as it does maintain a grounded reference. Its permanent and you don't lose the adaptor somewhere.

Tim, how does this work? Cap on the ground wire?

Thanks!

Let me start by saying I only use this for the standalone reverbs. These are dedicated units that always interface with an amp
The audio cables ground the chassis of the reverb unit.
The green wire is redundant when configured with a grounded amp and only serves to complete the ground loop antenna.
If the unit is somehow connected to an ungrounded device, it will still have a groud reference for AC current.
This helps to quiet hum from AC radiated from the PT into the chassis.
How does it work? :? Well let me pull this pencil neck geek out of my pocket protector. What's that you say?
He doesn't know. He stole it from actual engineers that work for a real amp company

Ok... I was going to say capacitors are good at blocking DC, but not AC (frequency dependent). But, prolly better left for another day. Another thread. :)

Thanks for the input!
I may look into that.
I ordered an Ebtech Hum X. Gonna give that a try first before I open the unit back up.

Interestingly, I had the ground loop noise at my house, but not at my gig.
