I'm in the market for a new Deluxe Reverb amplifier, but I haven't decided which version that I like best. I'm hoping others here would be kind enough to offer a little direction.

I will admit right off the bat that I probably wont use much, if any, vibrato or tremolo from the amp or from anywhere else. And, if you want my complete honesty, while I very much appreciate and prefer amps that have real spring reverb, I might be just as likely to use room or plate reverb from a pedal, because in general, I don't really use reverb.

What I like from an amp are kind of opposites: when I play, I either want extreme cleans, or I want modern distortion. So, the 68 Custom is a genius idea to me. Although, I am not familiar with its Celestion V-Type speaker. Can anyone list an artist or song or another amp that uses that speaker?

Also, while I think the 68 Custom is a smart design, the purest in me feels like the American made 65 Deluxe Reverb should also be considered. However, I haven't worked out what the differences between the Limited Edition 65 and the regular 65 are in terms of their respective speakers. One has a Jensen P12q, and the other has a C12k. Were either of these speakers actually in original Deluxe Reverbs in 1965? The P12q breaks up easier, I've experienced that much. And that makes me feel like the LTD DR is the best alternative to the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, if I want a rock sound.

I'd love to get some input on this. Thanks!

Neither of the two amps that you are asking about are vintage amps, but rather modern reissues (DRRI - 65) or modern modifications with "vintage" aesthetics (68 Custom). You would have better luck posting your question in the Modern amp message board.

While there are frequent posters on this board that may have experience with the two modern amps your asking about, the conversation here is about vintage amps that have very little in common with the modern counterparts you are inquiring about.

Good luck.

No.

In 1965, most Deluxe Reverbs left Fullerton with an Oxford 12K5. Late in the year a near-identical speaker from Utah was introduced.

IMHO, that era 12K5 were weak speakers, at best. Worst part of the amp. :(

+1, but with a qualifier.

Pre-'65 Oxfords were good-sounding speakers. Not quite as articulate as an equivalent-era Jensen, but pleasant tone nonetheless. Oxford's began to suffer after Fender's takeover by the CBS junta, when manufacturing tolerances were thrown under the bus in the interest of increased production numbers to meet FMI's demands. These onerous demands were also responsible for Fender discontinuing its use of Jensen speakers. Fender wanted cheaper speakers, Jensen refused to cheapen theirs by compromising their manufacturing standards.

But generally speaking to the topic at hand, Oxford's 12K5 is the best way to strangle the tone out of a Deluxe Reverb.
