Unfortunately my father's no longer with us (as he passed in 2009) for me to ask him so I'm here asking the Fender community. I'm posting pictures and may be able to post more upon request.

In my dads basement there's a Fender Super Reverb 4x10 amp with documentation of it being modded. I'm guessing that it being modded ruined some of the value but basically trying to find out about exactly what I've got. I don't play so can't use it. What exactly has he done to it and why?

What I do know: I remember him sending the amp off from Kentucky to California back in the early 90's but didn't know to whom or exactly where. This is a large heavy amp and must've been a bit costly I would assume. I remember him looking forward to getting it back and I remember when he got it back saying it was exactly what he wanted.

He would go to the ends of the earth to duplicate particular sounds that he wanted to be able to get from the comfort of his home. I do not know what sound he was wanting from this but I know he was big on "The Brown Sound" whatever that is and one of the cards in the back of the amp says "For Nice Clean Pre-CBS sound" and gives directions on how to adjust the amp.

Well it may of been a disaster before it was sent off as well :D because my dad had some bad ars guitar equipment in his basement and apparently had a great eye, almost like he could see the future . I've been digging through his equipment for 4 or 5 years and just reaching the bottom and it's been quite interesting. Some absolute amazing stuff including hundreds of effects pedals that are very sought after. Maybe I'm wrong but my guess would be that whatever this is, it's done up right in it's own way or the way my dad wanted it.... One mans trash kinda thing... :D ....

The amp may play well, I don't know but it loose almost all his value as a vintage.

With master volume It is a mid or late '70 amp , not sough after.

Gotcha! Was kinda hoping maybe it being an early 90's Dan Torres custom build with some documentation there may be something to it.. Once again, thanks to the Fender community , Now I know. Thanks stratele52

The mix of iron (if original) suggests a 1970 model. The front panel has been totally bastardized and the non-spec control labels are an added afterthought. As to the nature of the chassis mods, that's impossible to determine without a detailed examination of the wiring and comparing it to an AA270 schematic -- the amp as originally made was never an AB763 -- and any intrinsic historic value has for the most part been destroyed.

Master Volume look original and was added in 1976 by Fender as I read in The Fender Amp Book and The Blue Book of Guitar amplifiers .

Mon dieu, look at the goddamm pic!

The "master volume" label is a sticker......you ever see a Fender amp's panel nomenclature marked like that?

Get a grip.

This APPEARS to a one piece solid-state rectifier with added choke. Prolly bypassing the GZ34. You'd need to cut the wiring and lift the doghouse cover to see what has been done to the rest of the PSU.

Can you get photos of the main circuitry on the chassis? Thanks!

Not sure what's involved in it but I'll go down and take a look at it tomorrow and see if it's something I can do and update.

Look to me a small transformer, ( not a choke there is more than 2 wires ) feeding solid State rectifier with filter caps; To bring low voltage to relays inside the amp IMO.

Time Warp
Is the amp work ?
I could be a good amp for a modern player guitar player who do not want an original vintage amp. And are not afraid to buy a frankenstein amp
What is the value on the market ? Very hard to tell.

Certainly it doesn't have vintage value. However, Dan is a well known tech on the West coast and generally knows what he's doing.
The paper says its a high gain Mesa conversion with 3 extra stages, effects loop and channel switching.
While you could bub a HRDX with the same features at the time, I can see where pickers would trust to have their old amp modded rather than start anew.
The vintage value in the 90s would not preclude modding an amp because of vintage value. Retro could probably tell us what it was worth back then.
But it is what it is and I think you will be able to find a buyer who will be able to appreciate it without preconceptions.

Sorry for the delay reply, I've now subscribed to the thread in case there's any more updates. My guess is that it plays well as long as just sitting hasn't harmed it but haven't hooked it up. It's in the basement so wouldn't be a problem to hook it up one day.

I know it has super low use on it since the work was done. He kept it in the main room he played in and one day I asked him why he rarely played through it and he said it was too loud.

Someone had asked if I could take the chassis out for a looksy and after looking at it, I dunno if I'd be able to take it off and put it back on. I may end up giving it a go though.

Thanks, and good to hear Dan's still around, he may remember the big amp from kentucky 25 years ago lol, who knows!
