I saw that episode of CBS when it first aired, but it was nice to revisit it.
Thanks for the post

OK I'm guilty here. I put caps in caps. I thought it was cute.
I'm not counterfeiting. Its obvious to anyone that they aren't original.
But when a vintage cap measures 55uf instead of 25, its time to replace it.
I hate to throw the vintage look away, so I tuck a couple Spragues inside the old cap's paper cover. Unroll the positive end and it slides off..
Capacitor heating is not an issue by sleeving them. If anything, the sleeve will insulate them from tube heat.
Am I offending purists here?

The "Frampton" amp story is interesting. Just a bit of local knowledge on this venue may save someone from a serious mistake. Additional documentation is indeed necessary in this case.
Again, it proves the real value of these forums

+1

An inoperative amp is nothing more than a very expensive studio decoration, akin to a Hendrix poster thumbtacked on a wall.

Tims, IME... electrolytic caps in the PSU get warm, from use. You can feel it, esp in cap cans. It's why most caps need replacing. The electrolytic fluid evaporate with use.

Certainly, PS caps have dielectric heating from ripple. But that is a constant 50 cycle stress from the moment the amp is turned on.
The cathode caps have a much easier life. Only signal tickles them and the higher frequencies are easier to handle.
I don't keep the old caps from power supplies.
Under the blast cover, it seems a moot expression to put the old sleeves on.
