Hi All-
After 15 years, I noticed someone had replaced the choke with an old small box like choke. It had contacts instead of wires so they poked little holes in the chassis and attached wires from the board to it. I have two supers both early 70's, both in the same condition otherwise and the one with the original choke is much louder. Could that unknown choke cause lower volume? Should I replace it and if so which brand should I use. I also have an old Princeton Reverb with a bad Reverb Transformer. Again, which brand should I buy? Thanks, Chris

The choke's function is to provide additional P/S filtering to minimize any AC ripple current -- replacing it with the correct type isn't likely to make the amp louder (though I personally would replace it as a matter of course). The difference in volumes between the two SR's is likely due to some other malfunctive manifestation. IOW, time for some troubleshooting.

Thanks!

I'll post one when I get a chance. It's, old, small, box like, square with two terminals on the top in stead of wires. What about a replacement reverb transformer for my 70' Princeton Reverb. Who makes the best?

Any number or codes on the choke? Sounds like a Stancor or some such iron.

AES has nice reverb transformer. This one will work on your PR.

Thanks. Does anyone know what brand of choke that is or what it came out of?

"216" is the EIA of Jackson. Makers of tube testers. I believe they did make aftermarket trannies, in the 1950s.

I'll post your pic, on an audio DIY board.

Not sure. Amp making humming noise? You may want to measure the B+ before and after the choke, to see if you are losing too much voltage across the choke.

If choke resistance is too high it will reduce current available for power ; read resistance and B+ voltage

Buy them at tubesandmore or antiques electronic, same store.

You need more tests

I have two Supers the B+ voltage is lower on the one with the weird choke and it doesn"t have the punch of the other one. Is Hammond a good brand or should I get the direct Fender replacement?

Hammond is a very good brand , Canadian made. I use it often their transformer.
Lower B+ How it is ?
How is output voltage at power transformer ?

To me you play lotto.
Lower power may come from so much things.
First, from tubes
Second, power transformer voltage
Phase inverter resistor values
Output transformer

To name few.
