I'm in the position where I don't care what they cost. In fact, I seldom even ask -- I just tell the salesclerk to wrap it up and ring me out.

Stratele,

IME, I haven't had too many vintage US or Philips-Euro made rectifiers flash-over or short out --- as long as the PSU is properly built and has healthy caps. Quite a few work for years --- so the overall cost is not as much.

I cannot say that for several modern JJ, Sovtek, or Chinese-made 5Y3GT, 5U4GB, or 5AR4, which I have tried.

If you use modern rectifiers, just be sure the fuse is the proper one.

Many of my customer play gigs.
All of their amps use modern tubes rectifier wich last so many years. These amps never come back for a new rectifier tube.

The right fuse is a must on all electronic / electric gear.

My question is why pay more for a NOS rectifier ?

Is sound is better ? Not to my ears.
It look better in original vintage amp ? Maybe and why not.
I want to learn if I missed something

For me it's a question of who is more trustworthy......

A skilled technician earning a middle-class salary who was proud of his/her work or some hastily-trained political prisoner making slave wages whose only "crime" is refusing to march to Chairman Mao's drummer.

I'm working off experience, over the last 30 years. I really don't know why it seems difficult to build a consistently high quality tube rectifier. Now, ppl like the selected TAD and Gold Lion 5AR4. However, they've only been sold the last few years, so no word on longevity. These selected tubes are not cheap. They are in the $25-50 each range. A range that one can still find nice vintage US made 5U4GB tubes. Many amps can use either 5AR4 or 5U4GB...

I have a stock of Philips-Mullard GZ34 or US 5AR4 that goes into ppl's amps. When, it get low, I'll prolly try these selected new stock.

That's your cross to bear, not mine.
