1953 Telecaster with 1957 Factory Refinish. All Original except pickguard

This is sitting at the local shop. Played it unplugged very briefly. The neck is not chunky at all. Very light weight.... a little over 7 lbs. I would have played it longer but one of my sons kept trying to FaceTime me while I was playing it. Damn kids!

Edit - Fixed the link. FWIW - I have nothing to do with the sale of this guitar.... just thought I would share. Pretty cool guitar.

Very nice! I'd prolly replace those wax caps if they leaked DC. Make it a daily player. Cool project guitar!

Thanks! For link.

The whole story sounds a bit fishy to me .. no proof, just their word, and the price tag of $19K.

This is the only forum I visit and participate in.... The normal forums seem to be focused on new gear. This being a vintage guitar I thought those of us interested in vintage amps would appreciate it more. So that's why I posted as OT. :D

Unfortunately in the world of "collectibles" there are frauds out there. I can understand the tendencies to be skeptical. And relicing gear has become so common place that certainly adds to those concerns. And certainly the genius of Leo Fender to make his guitars out of interchangeable parts adds to the ability of fraudsters to practice their craft. Much more difficult for a fixed neck Gibson. Of course the problem there is the Chinese knock-offs.

I know on the rare occasion when I take my 1974 Telecaster Thinline out in public, there are always a few people skeptical of it. Its black with a white pick guard and a maple neck. There are always those people that think I have painted a re-issue. I bought it used and have owned the guitar since 1983. Well....... Black was a custom color and actually makes the guitar more valuable. Who knew.... I just wanted a tele because I was a Springsteen fan.

I certainly could have purchased a reliced cabinet for the 1962 brown Vibrolux I am restoring.... pasted in a fake tube chart and found a period correct driver and then try to pass it on as fully original. I want to keep the amp.... and I guess I'm just too honest. I am trying to make sure that there are enough signs to it that its a replacement/replica cabinet. And the modern Weber speaker is a give away. Now someone 20 years from now getting their hands on this amp..... who knows. :?

I can tell you that this shop is very reputable. There is actually a well-known vintage dealer who has now moved his inventory into this shop. He's trying to "retire" and closed his shop and moved into this local shop. So there are two sets of experienced eyes looking at this guitar. I know a lot of due diligence went into researching the guitar (its actually on consignment). The refinish was a concern to them, but there is well documented proof that Fender was doing factory refinishes during the days Leo owned the company. I saw the guitar in pieces when it was being photographed.... I just happened to stop in to check up on the Vibrolux and got to see the guitar and all of the markings first-hand..... it looks and feels authentic to me.

FWIW - Reverb estimated the price range between $20-30K. Sales histories from 2013-14 seem to be in the $16-25K range. I'm sure it will end up selling for less than asking price. But that is the question..... does the 1957 Fender Factory Refinish diminish the guitar. I guess we'll find out.

But I truly understand your skepticism. :D

Phansford, don't sweat it posting that sweet Tele on the vintage amp forum, just buy it and pose it next to that beautiful Harvard, that should satisfy everyone!

FWIW, there was a 53 blackguard/blonde very similar to this one sold at the auction last week for around $5k....
Didn't read up on it, it may not have had any provenance besides being a great Fender Tele.

$5K for a 1953 Telecaster seems kinda low. Must not be in too good shape. A player...

Anything over $1,000 is out of my league. haha.

The owner decided not to sell the Tele right now and took it off the market. Best to have seller's remorse before you sell.
