I hooked up the Utah 12" and it did work, though it did sound rather flat and hollow, sought of had a sound of a 1938 recording, I don't mean like a scratched record, kind of lacking fidelity.

Recall my previous comments re this speaker.

Oh without a doubt.

Since I replaced the filter cap can, there is still a slight hum, less than before it was changed, I was getting with the reference mic, not touching the grill, but as close as can be, 120hz at 62 dB, so last night I re-flowed the ground on the can, and brought the wires going to the can off the chassis and this lowered it some to 53dB, am I being to picky.
If I change out the 1st stage to the 40uf lug will this quite it down more, it will give my rectifier more of a ride. Looking at my rectifier tube there are no marking on the tube telling if it is a 5Y3 just RCA marking on the base. Could the tube be putting out the hum. I checked my plate voltage and it was more of what a bronco should be 424Vdc and it is biased around 37ma. Any thoughts

Mud, this is a single-ended amp. It does not have the added bonus of hum reduction of a push-pull amp. So, they tend to have some inherent floor noise.

You can try different tubes. And select the ones which are most quiet in your amp.

Thanks I had a feeling that the little hum was just part of the sound and 53 dB with mic on grill is not to bad, a lot better than the 62 I was getting. Eventually I will get a few 6v6's and 5Y3's to swap around, right now my arsenal is 6L6's, GZ34's 5U4's and preamp tubes

US-made (NOS) 5Y3's remain plentiful and reasonably priced. Grab several when shopping for glass. As well, single NOS 6V6GTA's can still be found at bargain prices. Throw a few of those in your cart as well.

So today I wanted to hear what the VC sounded with the line 6 two Celestron 12's I have, as I don't use it much and it has DSP issues, another story.

So I hooked it up and let it rip

I must admit it had quite the big sound and lots of volume, quite surprising for a 5 watt amp

I suggest the mil spec GE 6087 rectifier. Direct replacement for the 5Y3GT. Slow start-up. Saves your cap can and output tube. The Bendix 6106 is the primo slow-start 5Y3GT derivative. But, they are getting more and more $$$.

Believe me, the GE 6087 (aka 5Y3WGT, 5Y5WGTB, or 6087W) is an excellent tube, too. TW is a good source for honest high testing, quiet tubes.

That RCA 5Y3GT will prolly last you... like 10-15 years. Think about the 6087 or 6106 as backup rectifier. I'll keep eye out for good deals.
