CE 40/20/20 at 500VDC photo with sections:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41hboNb%2B52L.jpg

So, to wire this cap can, you'd need to rotate it, as seen in this photo. So that the 40mfd section (upside down D) goes to proper wire.

Then, solder the middle wire to the far terminal square --- with can re-aligned.

Top wire goes to the triangle post.

Like how this VC was wired:

BTW... Use a good 5Y3GT rectifier, ESP if you are going to put 40mfd on the first section. I recommend a nice US made NOS tube. They are still at good price.

Absolutely.

If only vintage GZ34's were similarly priced.

Yeah. Dunno why GZ34 are so darn $$$. Good US made 5U4GB are still relatively cheap.

As for the 5Y3GT... I really like consumer type GE black plate NOS 5Y3GT. There are great mil spec tubes, too. Slow-start GE 6087. Bendix 6106. Tungsol JAN-CTL 5Y3WGT.

RCA, Sylvania, Ken-Rad, Philco labeled, National Union are all great tubes.

Thanks for all the info. Here is what I will do, I ordered a capacitor - Multi-section, 40/20/20/20uF 525 VDC
and a tip for my old Weller 100/140 watt gun. I am going to use the 20/20/20 at first just to hear what Leo had intended, than after I get some good 5Y3GT rectifier tubes in my heard I will than try the 40uF on the first stage, not that the NOS RCA 5Y3 that came with is bad, it measured 122 out of 140 on my EICO 666 tube tester, but I just want some spares before I give it the 40uF just in case.
I also agree that these GZ34 are to darn expensive, I keep some of them for my SFSR
So now the wait for parts and time, the next two weeks are very busy at work with graduation coming at the end of this month.

Be interesting to see what you think about 20/20/20 versus 40/20/20. One other thing about the VC --- be sure the 470-ohm, 2 watt resistor off the 6V6GT cathode is within tolerance (5%). This resistor helps set the 6V6GT idle bias current.

As for the GZ34/5AR4, a very nice rectifier is the JAN Philips 5AR4 which was mis-labeled 5V4GA. These are 100% Sylvania-Philips ECG mil spec 5AR4 tubes. I have used many (more than 6) in GZ34 amps. They test as 5AR4, make B+ of 5AR4, internal construction of the 5AR4. At a very good price. This seller is a good guy, too.

US made Sylvania, GE, RCA 5AR4 are just as good as the Mullard.

Check construction of the EBay ad versus a Sylvania 5AR4 and the 5V4GA.

+1

And they seem to last forever.

NOS GZ34's seemed to be hard to find until the last few months, I have bumped into bunches...two Mullards, a GE and two RCA's and all NOS! I was down to just one Bugle Boy and a Sovtek, so happy to have the stash restocked.

Good thing is that one good GZ34/5AR4 will prolly last another 5 years of heavy use. And 10-25 years of moderate use. Provided the PSU caps are healthy.

Luckily, every one of my amps has been serviced within the past year or two, so I am betting those F&T's will hold up pretty well!

I would expect no less than fifteen years of reliable service from F&T electrolytics regardless of the severity of usage.

Umm...mud.....Are those Telefunken 12AX7s? Looks like one is that and the other is marked ECC803S. Correct?

If so, those are "holy grail tubes" (at least in Europe) and they tend to go for about 100 USD each, maybe more depending on condition.

Both are TFK ECC83/12AX7 tubes. The ECC803S is a frame-grid tube. Note the boxy, small anode plates in photo. Most I've seen are gold plated pins. Though, some have used steel pin variety.

Yep definitely Telefunken, haven't pulled them yet, but I will tomorrow and I will look to see what pins are there. I did pull the RCA's and the 6V6 tested off the chart and the 5Y3GT rectifier was 122 out of 140. If all goes right the cap can I ordered should be here tomorrow, and I hope to sit down with the amp this weekend and bring it back online

I'm always amazed by how well you guys know these circuits and components, it's really very impressive.
