Hey guys, got a sweet 76 DR in great shape for a pretty good price. I haven't pulled the chassis yet, but the trannies all line up as far and codes go. The SN on the chassis didn't make sense according to info I found on some websites (A43000 to A45000 – 1976). The model looks like its an export model, it has a voltage selector on the back. Might the export models have a different SN numbering than the domestic models? Thanks

I'd say your 1976 hunch is correct......

"1970-1989 -Most amps do not have a date code stamped on the tube location chart. These codes are for amps with the serial number beginning with a letter:

B+5---digits - 1975-1976
A6+5-digits - 1976
A7+5-digits - 1977
A8+5-digits - 1978
A9+5-digits - 1979
F0+5--digits - 1980
F1+5--digits - 1981
F2+5-digits - 1982/83
F3+5-digits - 1983/84
F4+5-digits - 1984/85
F9+5-digits - 1979-1980"

The grill cloth is original -- Fender used that orange-stripe weave from 1974 until late 1977 when they switched back to the metallic turquoise pattern.

So does the voltage selector make it an export amp? The guy I got it from thought it came from a serviceman in Germany.

Yes it is. I am retired Air Force and spent 11 years in Germany and I had an export Vibro Champ with the multi voltage selector. Sure made small jams easier!

Yep, Arjay called it correct, in fact my Export Vibro Champ had the exact same orange stripe cloth...it was a 76 too! I sold that amp to a buddy in Germany and should have kept it, seemed to have a bit more oomph to it.

Yes, Oxford 12K5. For anyone wishing to sonically strangle a Deluxe Reverb Amp, that's the speaker to do it.

T2, thanks for the info.

Arjay, great tip. I'll just keep that speaker in the box.

I'll post some pics of the innards after I have time to pull the chassis.

+1

That's what I did with the OEM Oxford that came in my '68 Deluxe Reverb. I didn't even bother unsoldering the original wiring harness -- I just boxed the entire mess up and replaced it with a gray-basket JBL D120F and repro wiring.

Sonically, the difference between the two speakers was like pitting the Wright Flyer against a P-51D Mustang.
