Because of health reasons, I need to downsize my '73 Twin Reverb to something more portable. I was thinking about a Hot Rod Deluxe, but people tell me I won't be happy with that. What would you guys recommend I go to?

Why don't you try some amps to see which one you'll like ?

I gigged exclusively with a JBL-equipped Twin Reverb (well over 100 lbs) for over twenty-five years. Because I suffer those likely-similar "health reasons" I now do most of my work with a modified Deluxe Reverb or -- periodically -- a '64 Vibroverb. I still have my Twin Reverb (two of them, actually) but they haven't been used in several years now.

Restored silverface era Deluxe Reverb or Princeton Reverb may fit your current needs. Blackface era of both amps would really be nice, but are very $$$ these days. Circuitry of the SF era DR & PR amps are pretty close to the BF era ones.

A vintage Silverface Vibrolux, Custom Vibrolux Reverb, or one of the new '68 Custom Vibrloux Reverbs might fill the bill as well, especially if you are a fan of 2x10's! All pretty good amps!

I might also throw in a Fender Concert II (made between '82 & '85), but at 61 pounds for the 2x10 version it might be more than your health concerns are willing to handle.

Yes my twin did me in also.
I like the blackface Princeton Reverb or Deluxe Reverb.
Not sure if the re-issues sound as good as the vintage.

Properly tweaked (tube array, idle bias, upgraded speaker), the DRRI can sound nearly as sweet as a vintage model. I own three Deluxe Reverbs -- a '68, a '78, and a 1994 re-issue. The tone from the latter is just about as tasty as my older editions.

I cannot say the same about the PRRI only because I do not have one to compare against my 1965 model. Impromptu demo's in a store have sounded promising though.
