I am trying to understand the normal channel on my 66 BF SR or any Fender amp channel without a mid adjustment. It seems I always end up with the treble and bass adjustments at such a wide spread from each other. Example on my BF SR I had my treble at 8 and my bass under 2 and any higher the bass seems sloppy. It seems the same on my "69 Custom Vibrolux as well even though not as extreme. Now in saying that I did some experimenting and its seems the more I turn the treble down the more I can turn the bass up maintaining its tightness and clarity. Is that because when doing so I am introducing mids? I am using a Strat and have the bright switches off. I like a bell like tone but hate sloppy bass or boomy bass. Also on the vibrato channel with a mid adjustment there is far less spread between bass and treble. Thanks for any pointers or advice.

On Fender amps that lack an adjustable mid control I generally set my treble at 6 and the bass at 4½ or 5. If using a Gibson with humbuckers, the bright switch is on -- off for a Strat. With amps that include the mid control I'll back that treble down to 5 or 5½, set the mids to 7, and leave the bass as before. Same caveats apply to the bright switch.

Speaker voicing has a lot to do with an amp's sonic perception. If your bass is muddy it might be time to consider a different set of drivers or have your originals re-coned. The only speaker I'd ever consider for a Super Reverb is the CTS alnico or Jensen's Chicago-made C10Q. The Kendrick Blackframe 10 *might* be a worthy cost-effective alternative.

Thanks. I tried your EQ settings and they sound pretty good. However I think you are right about the speakers. The speakers in the 66 SR are original and probably tired. I used an extension 2x12 cab with two Eminence Legends and the amp really opened up. I may get the originals reconed but in the mean time order some CTS alnicos. Also I am not impressed at all with the Celestions in the "68 Vibrolux and also tried it with the extension cab. What a difference to the better. So I may get the Jensens you recommended for that.

I always thought that the special-design Celestions installed in the '68 Custom Vibrolux were a poor choice if vintage tone were the intent. Webers would've make more sense.

What speakers are currently installed in your Super Reverb?

Not sure but here is a picture. Maybe you can tell by the pics? Probably should replace the speaker wiring too.

Ceramic CTS, likely original to the amp and definitely worth re-coning.

And there's nothing wrong with the wiring, no need to replace.

I was adjusting the EQ on the normal channel and ended up at 4.5 bass and 6 treble and it sounds great! I am with you. I think reconing is a good thought but even now they sound so good. Also just brought up the mids on the Vibrato channel and adjusted close to your treble setting and very nice. Also moved the SR off the wall another couple of feet. Very happy now. You have been a huge help Sir. Did not know what I was missing. Thank you.

You're quite welcome.

Placement of the amp adjacent to a wall has the practical effect of acoustically loading the speaker cones which often tightens up the low-frequency response of the driver(s). Perceived volume is often increased as well since the reverse waves radiating from the rear of the cones are funneled laterally and, ultimately, forward.

I've always had a strong dislike of Celestions in open back cabinets, or in anything requiring a "Fendery" tone.

I'd second that but with a caveat for Celestion's Alnico Gold Series -- once broke in, they sound remarkably "Jensen-ish" in an open-back combo.

+1 on those Ceramic CTS speakers. I have the same speakers in my '65 BFSR and they have a nice tight bass, but the amp seems to have sat in a closet for many a year, as it was all completely original (two prong cord and untouched electronics, everything) except two speakers. I replaced those two with matching period correct ones and the tone and reverb are to die for! My favorite tone wise of my amps. And with a P90 equipped Gibson Les Paul Special, this amp sparkles!
