so how does it sound with the 2x 12 compared to the 4x 10's ? I've been thinking of making a 2x 12 cab to use with my SR

Mud...The highs are crystal clear but not piercing, just accentuated VERY much. The mids are more pronounced. The bass is solid, but not nearly as tight as my 4x10 '65. I can't say for certain but I think the '68 Jensen C12Qs have a huge impact on this amps tone. The speakers have a nice break up at about 4-5 on the amp, but I don't really want to push them to 6 or higher. The speakers have the original cones and even though they have been sitting in an unused cabinet since late '68 I don't want to blow them.

I got the cab with the Jensen's from a buddy of mine over 30 years ago and have been saving them for something special and this amp seemed like the right choice.

Thanks for the run down I might go through my grave yard of speaker baskets, some work, some are just skeletons, see what 12s are about, and put together a cab if the right baskets are there.

Glad to help Mud. It really does make a change to the tone of the amp, not better or worse, just different but in a pleasant way. I sure like the tone. Go for the two twelve cab and your question got me wondering what a 4x10 cab would sound like with my '66 Bassman? Would it sound similar to a tweed Bassman or what? Hmmm. May have to do some testing some time to check it out.

Experimenting with different speakers in general can be fun, having different tone changes with the same amp, just as long as you are mindful and measure for correct impedance, and wattage

Mud....yep. I wired the speakers in parallel, they are 25 watters, and I am running a 100% mismatch. 4 ohms vice the normal Super Reverb's 2 ohm output, hence why I will probably never dime the amps volume knob.

When it comes to these amps (SR, TR, Showman)... the street ain't big enough to dime them.

I remember an article about Steve Miller diming his Sunn amp, on his ranch in Northern CA. And the gas station attendant telling customers, "Oh that's Stevie tuning up." One-half mile away, down the road.

I believe you are right, besides it's not like I don't get to dime the Princeton!

I specified a 30-watt coil when I had that CTS speaker overhauled so you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever.

Rawk on!

Well I broke out my SPL meter this weekend, as my wife says "ya know I think you may be a little loud and may be hurting your ears, you are a sound guy and need them"
So I have been playing my SFSR on 2 mostly, sometimes up to 3, and once in a while go as far as 4, well now I have to be mostly just a smidgen below 2.
This is measured in A weighting on a stand positioned right next to my ear
Treble @ 6
Mid @ 5.6
Bass @4.8
Volume @ 2 = 89 to 95 average Peak @ 99.9 db
Volume @ 3 = 98 to 114 average Peak @ 119
Volume @ 1.97 = 76 to 85 average Peak @ 89.5
I didn't go to 4 as this is when stuff starts to fall off the shelves in my room

Good to know, now I can crank it for that Power Tube Saturation without worry.
