Well it is winter time here in the Midwest and this winters amp project is going to be my biggest challenge yet. My drummer son really enjoys these projects together and wants to learn guitar this winter so this may end up as his upon completion.

I bought this '69 Super Reverb "Amp" from a local emporium I frequent for a mere $100. My first thought was it might be good for nothing more than parts. Then I looked at the tubes and there sits a UK Mullard GZ34, a pair of US made GT 6V6's...hmmm these are NOT the proper tubes for this! All the preamp tubes were NOS GE's! They said they couldn't fire it up as the two prong cord was frayed and copper wires were showing and I am thinking you better not fire it up with the wrong tubes in it.

Upon further inspection, all the Iron was original, so I pulled the amp from the "cab" it was in and took a look at the guts...everything looked clean and untouched....hmmm again. It had the original caps, so I thought, maybe this is worth saving, but won't know until a new power cord is installed, proper tubes etc,. Took it to my amp tech and once he finished the cap job, installed a correct NOS 5U4GB rectifier and a good sounding pair of Sovtek 6L6's he hooked it up to a reverb pan and some speakers and was astonished at how good it sounded.

So I decided to have fun with this one. Ordered all new hardware, a new BF Face plate, a new 4 spring reverb pan, a blond cab with oxblood grill cloth in a 2x12 configuration. My parts are coming in and with a little guidance from Arjay this amp will be saved. I have two practically NOS '68 Jensen C12Qs that I have been saving for something just like this.

Here is the before shot. Just amazing how poorly this "Cab" was built, but it was built like a TANK! Took me over three hours to remove the chassis!

As this progresses over the next month I will update this refurb along the way. If you are faint of heart do not scroll down to these photos...they are damn near sacrilegious!

T2, one thought when I saws those photos... DIY!

Are you going to make the SR a head unit? Prolly be the only one I know of in existence. I strongly suggest taking the circuit back to AB763. Usual changing of bias circuit (to bias pot) and changing the plate loading resistors on the phase inverter. Removing those after-thought cathode-tied resistors & grid-to-ground caps on the output tubes.

This ought to be interesting. Good luck & keep us informed.

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of the new furniture. Blonde Tolex and oxblood cloth with a blackface front panel will make for a very sexy looking amp.

Just a short update tonight. Reverb pan and its accompanying suspension system completed and in its bag ready for mounting.

Chassis and all parts except my face plate laid out ready for installation and assembly.

Cabinet. I got this from MOJOTONE and wow they build a great cabinet! Of course it ain't a Retroverbial build, but it'll do!

Tomorrow night is Corvette Meeting night, so the disassemble of the silver face plate happens Friday night.

Look a the fuse if it is the right one. I often found too powerfull fuse in many old amps

When I first got it home there was NO Fuse in it! It has been FULLY scoped out and returned to as close to factory spec as it can get!

T2,

I too am really liking all I see on your project! I too like the blonde tolex amps! That cabinet looks righteous. Looking forward to your progress.
