I've been thinking about getting a new bass. I was looking at the Mustang Bass, but I've heard that it's bad for bass-heavy music. Since I want to to play bass-heavy music what would you recommend?

I'm thinking a 5 string or anything Precision.

Amp makes a difference. Any Fender with the correct amp can sound heavy, even if it's not a Pbass. Ibanez BTB has a great sound for heavey music, plus 35" scale is great for drop tuning. Try the Big Block, it's set up for a heavy low down punch in the chest kinda thumping. Good luck.

What image? If it sounds good, who cares what it looks like? If he's playing heavy music, image would be the last thing he's looking for.

If you're going to stick with fender, definately a 5 string American Standard Precision Bass if heavy metal is absolutely all you play but if you make a variety, maby a 5 string American Standard (or Deluxe) Jazz Bass is better. I play mostly metal but I make a variety so I chose an American Deluxe Precision Bass because of the tone controll and the fact that its the heavyer bass between jazz and precision.
