Hi everyone,
I don't need one, but have been thinking of picking up a second bass lately to back up my P-bass. There are three specifically in my area (Washington State) that I've been eyeing. One is a mid 200s Mark Hoppus Fender Jazz, another is a Fender Precision Special-Cowpoke and the third is a black JP-90. They're all in the same $300-$400 price range. Anything I should be looking for with these? Is one prone to failure or issues than the other? I've read positive comments on the Cowpoke, but the Hoppus and JP-90 have appeal to me too. Thanks in advance, advice and opinions are always welcome.

I'd hop on that Hoppus at that price for sure!

The Hoppus and JP90 are both passive. The Cowpokes are active. I like the Cowpokes a lot but prefer passive instruments as a general rule. The Cowpoke preamp can be noisy. The JP90 has my favorite P/J wiring scheme. Simple and effective. The JP90 is USA made, but the body is poplar. Doesn't matter a lot. The Hoppus doesn't have a tone control which makes it sort of one dimensional requiring amp adjustments for different tones instead of a tone knob on the instrument. I had a JP90 and foolishly traded it.

Thanks for the advice so far. Brotherdave, I have the same opinion regarding passive and active basses. I was willing to give active another try because it seems like the cowpoke is a good bass, but after your testimony, I think I'll give the JP90 a closer look.

Brother Dave and I both have high respect for the JP-90. Such a simple build, one of the first, and arguably one of the best P/J passive basses ever made. And even today, they are still a value buy. At some point, these are going to start gaining value...surprised it is not worth double what they sell for already.

Thanks affprod. Between you and brotherdave, that's some high praise. Pending what the misses has planned, I'm planning on checking out the PJ90 this weekend.

Those JP 90's are pretty cool. 8) If I had the chance, I'd probably jump on that. Then again, I do like the oddball stuff that's not as common as the usual gear.
