What do these go for? I was lucky enough to be given one in playable condition but in need of work by a professional. It's showing its age and some idiot removed the sunburst finish some time ago. I'd like to bring the instrument back to original condition but I'm curious as to its value. It's an all-original 3-switch model and has the original whammy bar.

IMO there is no 1962 bass VI.

If the bass have not the original finish value drop a lot . Same with new finish .

Pretty sure the Bass VI came out in 1961 and ran until sometime in the early or mid 70s. I do not have references with me or I could tell you for sure and give you an approximate value.

I did find an article that mentions a 62 sunburst, but I cannot vouch for its accuracy. But you might like to read it.

Figure the refinish takes away about half its value. Just a kind of rule of thumb, not an accurate measure. Once refinished, unfortunately, it will always be a player class bass. That's not say it isn't relevant, I have a few refinishes that are both fun to play and a nice little snapshot of history - they just aren't worth as much to a collector.

There is another kind of neat article I stumbled across. A Bass VI is frequently referred to as a baritone guitar. Thought it might be of interest to you.

Yes it is a 62. Verified the serial number. I don't want to sell it, I plan on refurbishing and refinishing it so I can start gigging with it. It needs to be played! :-)

Original they go for $5k to $8K or a tad higher with special provenance.

Agree with Affprod that you can about half the value for a refinish. Even original solder joints matter! No kidding. So the collectible ship has already sailed here. So you are looking at a retail market value of approximately $2500 to $3500 around where I live in the southeastern USA. Even a 52 Refinished P-Bass struggles to bring more than that around here. Refinishing is the bane of the vintage market.

I might just get it cleaned up, professionally setup and play it as is. If you want it refinished again, there are several good shops around that specialize in vintage finish restoration and can make it look super close to the way an original finish would look after 52 years. Such a person is Gord Miller. Restoration shops in Gord Miller's league are not cheap and they are not fast but they are good.

For fast and cheap refinishes the name Mark Jenny comes to mind.

+1 on Gord Miller. I have used him and I would recommend him without reservation. But as BD pointed out, work of that quality does not come cheap, and it's going be several months before you see it again.

Another cool fact about Gord, he is also excellent restoring vintage cases.
