Ho to all,
I've bought a used japanese Mustang bass; this instruments is fairly new but need a strings change....
I've search over Internet for some infos about what kind of strings do fitting best on my bass but i'm still a bit confused....
So: can i put long scale strings on this bass ? Short scale gauges are very hard to find here in Florence (Italy) and my favourite on-line shop does not sell short scale gauges...
I would like to put (in case is possible) a set of Fender 8250 tapewound on my Mustang: do you think this would be a good choice ?
Any tip will be very appreciated :-)

  You are going to have to get short scale strings. You can not cut down a long scale stringset that far without destroying them. Fender lists
http://www.fender.com/basses/mustang/mustang-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-vintage-white-4-ply-tortoise-shell-pickguard/
Fender® USA Bass 5250XL Short-Scale NPS, (.040-.095 Gauges) as the factory stock string set.

D'Addario does offer a short scale nylon tapewound stringset: http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=200&productname=ETB92S_Tapewound_Bass__Medium__50_105__Short_Scale

These are the most popluar tapewounds, so you should be able to order a set. Perhaps from Thomann? Nope, but they do have this set which is very close to the stock Fender set. http://www.thomann.de/gb/daddario_exl170s.htm

Hope this helps.

HIi linnin and thank you for your reply ;-)

You can not cut down a long scale stringset that far without destroying them... What did you mean exactly ? I don't mind if i have to cut a long string to make it shorter, if it fit on the bass, then it is good for me...
But maybe, you're telling me that's not a good solution ?

Every stringset needs to trimed down to fit each particular bass, but cutting down a long scale set to fit a short scale bass will require you to cut too much and the windings of the outer wrap will come undone from the core wire, and the stringset will be destroyed. Don't do it. Order a short scale stringset to fit your bass, and then you will be happy. :)

HI linnin and thanks again !

I've found the stock Fender strings on Amazon, so i'll order a new set to replace the older strings...
Just the last question: my Mustang has standard bass tuning pegs (just as my Squier Jazz VM).
It seems it has the chance to strings any kind of strings, other users of Mustang basses do exactly this, do you still think this is the wrong way to put a new gauge on a short scale bass ?

If your Mustang strings through the body, measure the scale length through the body. Medium length strings may fit the Mustang. I ran D'Addario ETB92S (short) Nylons through a Pawn Shop Mustang, and they really needed to be ETB92M (medium) Nylons. This placed the silk above the nut, without having to trim some of the silk from protruding into, and below the nut.

HI Mr. Nylon and thank you :-)

Yes, the Mustang bridge is strings through body and, as you stated, should be a "medium strings" scale (regarding strings lenght...). What i'm wondering, is the fact that since the bass has regular tuning pegs, why not to string it with long scale scale gauges cutting away a part of the string.... Anyway, i've put an order on Amazon for a stock set of Fender 5250xl (...as suggested by linninn)

My recommendation for tapewounds on a medium scale are Rotosound Tru Bass. I had a set of these in medium scale on an acoustic electric bass guitar for years. Killer tone. The great thing about the Roto's as opposed to the Fenders and some other strings is that the Rotos are actually Flats and not taped Rounds like the Fenders.

Here's the link. Buy 'em. Slap 'em on. Never change them.

Thanks Kingofpain !

I've tried the D'addario Chromes, definitively not my kind of strings... But maybe these made of nylon are differents...

Here's a video where you can check them out on a P/J.

It's not only string length, but where the silk starts above the nut for scale length.

Thank you, they all play fine through the Super Bassman. The 4 12's are kickers.
