Does Fender own Hartke? Anyway some guy has a Hartke 5 string active AR from when Hartke first came out with basses- he wants to sell it to me super cheap. I guess it has some electrical problems- says the neck and body are perfect. I couldn't find any worthwhile info during my search. I want to know what wood it is.

It's an offer I can hardley turn away. Don't worry I'll put the eagle eye on it. I need a five string right now. It will be (if I get it) a 5 with the big string tuned to D- oh yeah that's the deal.

Thank you, me......

AR 5 string active I think- I'm going to check it out tomorrow. I remember when those came out they were like 700 bucks or more . That's what he said about it so I guess it is from the early batches of the basses. I think Japan made at first then I don't know. Now I need to know how hard it would be to make it passive if I had to.

To go from active to passive is very easy , you need less room in you bass body .

Just find passive pickups . you may need new pots too

Got the bass for $50. I'm going to make it passive. I have a set of Fender MB-5 Jazz style pickups that will fit in the soap bar holes. They line up well enough. I'll just screw them in and stick some new pots and cap in it. It will be a Fartke 5 string. First I'll check the soapbars and see what the reading is on them (multi-meter) to see if I can use them. they may be weak though because they were in the active original system.
