Is there a difference between rosewood and maple fingerboards?

Rosewood is bit more mellow, and deeper. Maple a bit more of a higher tone.

I for one, find that rosewood is easier to play, but I like both and have one of each. Rosewood on my Jazz and white neck on my Precision. 8)

I think Rosewood helps mellow the brighter sounding Jazz Bass pickups while maple adds more upper mids and snap to the bass heavy humbucking P-Bass. I like the feel of rosewood better but the maple does sound brighter on a P-Bass than rosewood to me and helps one cut through better. Rosewood also tends to help tame pick click for pick players with a P-Bass since it sounds a tad mellower. Maple is harder so it is more durable for use with roundwounds than rosewood but maple also will discolor from wear around the first and second frets. The rosewood boards wear faster with roundwound strings actually but they don't show it due their dark color. You can sometimes feel wear in the rosewood boards of heavily used instruments, especially on the first three frets of the E and A string where slight unevenness you can feel can eventually become more like grooves you can see. So they each have benefits and disadvantages depending upon the inherent brightness of the pickup, your personal style of play, what kind of strings you like and the tone you seek.

The tone you get when rolling the highs all the way off, is the big advantage with maple fingerboards. That particular sound isn't available at any setting with rosewood.

Not sure if the rosewood neck is the only reason but my rosewood necked USA Precision is the best bass I ever owned or played. At least for me, I understand these things are subjective. My old Musicman which I got rid of was a little better balanced and lighter and had a maple neck.....it was a bit bright and lacked the "growl" that the P-bass has. I find both were easy to play...endless hours with no finger pain granted I set the action very low. I use fairly large gauge strings and depending on the band generally tune 1/2 to one full step down and drop D or C#.
