I don't know of anyone that collects Fenders because they were made by Fender/CBS. I know of lot of collectors that own basses that were produced during the CBS era, including myself, but none were bought using CBS as a criteria.

Thank-you. I know in the Fender Bass Handbook by Paul Baulmer he wrote that the bass may have seen Fender through the CBS years, so I was curious if anyone collected them. Thanks again.

I bought one because those were the Fenders that were available! CBS Fenders of that day & age were routinely met with great disdain and much 'poo-pooing'. A lot of Fenders of that era were bashed and thrashed and hot rodded/modified/mutilated and lit on fire ala Jimi Hendrix and otherwise turned into so much firewood.

I still have my much modified 1976 Fender Precision Hot Rod. No, it's not for sale.

I collect CBS era Fenders because they are still some of the best Fender basses that I have ever played.

Remember that the CBS era was from January 1965 through 1984 or 85. 20 years is a lot of bass production and some of them are great! Others -not so great, but still cool.

+1!

FMI (at the direction of CBS's profit-hungry board of directors) didn't really start turning out crap until the early '70s. Prior to that, Fender's instruments (their line of basses anyway) were still built to the industry standard that they themselves set in the '50s and early '60s.

I may have misunderstood the question, or taken it too literally.

I thought the query was "does anyone use CBS as THE qualifying criteria to buy a Fender bass". With the possible exception of BCbassman, I do not know of anyone. My response was not a critique of CBS builds vs pre or post CBS builds. (although I do have opinions, but they vary based on model, year, and COI)

I am in the process of two purchases of basses that were made before CBS bought Fender...not because they were made before CBS, but because they are two of the nicest basses ever made by anyone.

I have an obsession with the Fender Performer, well documented. I do not covet them because they were made by CBS, but because they are some of the nicest basses ever made by anyone.

I have collected every production four string Fender made in Fender's first fifty years, which includes pre, during, and post CBS ownership - none were bought based on who held the stock.

No, that was my question. Thanks (and thanks to everyone)!

I don't collect, but a mid to later 70's ash Precision bass with a rosewood fingerboard is a dream bass of mine.

If I had the money, I'd collect the 1995-99 stuff.

Just to clarify- I have never used CBS ownership as a criteria for buying a bass. They just happened to own the company when a lot of cool basses were made.
I was as frustrated as anyone when they started to let quality slip. But I remember talking to a guitar repair shop during the 70's and they said that Fender was constantly back ordered 2000 units. So the pressure to produce was always there.
