Bro. Dave picked a good one.
That Carol Kaye book is a real challenge. You really need a live teacher to take you through it. It is not a beginner level book IMHO.

Are you looking for information on how to play, or on Fender basses?

If on Fender basses they have these..

Before I started taking jazz bass lessons, I read both
- Music Theory for Dummies
- Bass Guitar for Dummies.

They are actually quite good - it is amazing how frequently I finish sentences (on music theory) for my jazz teacher having read these books.

What these books tend to lack is the "so what??" aspect but, all in all, they have served me well.

A good friend of mine who was a great jazz/funk/fusion player used to write for guitar magazine in a section teaching about musical theory as it relates to the bass. However what he told me is once you learn it all just forget it and play like everyone else does lol. Now granted I limited myself by giving up on music theory once I got to the circle of fifths but I figured I am just going to be a rocker and most of my favorite rockers never had a lesson and can't read a lick of music. But other then some improvisational forms of jazz and blues it would be tough for me to get gigs as a session player or commercial player due to not being much of a sight reader. IMO the most important things to learn if they are not innate to you is ear training and timing. Anyone can learn where to put their fingers but without a good ear and timing it is all for naught.

Probably get the most use out of this one:

But for detail and enjoyment, albeit only one model for three years, this is my fav.

The thing about learning bass theory (I find) is that once to have learned the theory, you can't imagine not knowing it - you realise how severely limited you would be if you didn't know it (playing jazz and blues at least).

For rock, just follow the guitarist and play root notes.
