I play a lot of Hammond Organ and electric piano, quite a bit of guitar, and a some bass. I've been playing my '60's Classic Vibe Squire Jazz Bass with a traditional Irish band and it's a lot of fun and sounds great. It's becoming pretty full time, and I'm interested in getting a better bass and have some basic questions: I love the looks of the new Starcaster Bass (it's shaped a lot like my old Baldwin Vibraslim guitar). How different does a semi-hollow bass sound from a solid body bass and how are those big humbucking pickups going to sound? I obviously don't want to overdrive my amp to distortion - I'd like a nice clean sound with a lot of bottom - kinda like an old upright bass might sound. Thanx!

Buy one and see/listen for yourself may seem like a super snide retort, but that is most likely what you're going to have to do. You are simply going to have to play it live with your band to know for sure. Order one. If you like it, great! If not, eat the shipping and return. Live dangerously, and give it a go!

LOL! Yeah, that's exactly what I'd say! Just wondered if we haven't seen semi-hollow basses for 40 years 'cause nobody liked 'em!

I love the sound of the new Starcaster. Actually it was the shape of the headstock that initially got my attention. Just in selecting which pickups or combination makes such a difference in the sound of the instrument. I like a clean sound without distortion and with the pu selector in the center position with the tone turned down gives me a nice sound. It has plenty of push too, when I change from my MP Jazz to the Starcaster I have to turn the volume down a bit. Because of the size of the body I have to concentrate to keep my fingers in the sweet spot when picking (finger style). I do love the sound and hope you do too.
