Hello, I just received my brand new AS Jazz Bass. Does the Fender sticker on the pick guard just peel off, or is there a trick to it? Thank-you.

Congrats on your new Jazz. Welcome to the forum as well. The Fender sticker is attached to a Pickguard Protector film, that will peel off. Just take your time peeling off the PG film. What amp are you running your Jazz through? When you get a chance, post some photos of your new Jazz.

Welcome & congratulations on your new American Standard Fender Electric Jazz Bass Guitar! :)

Yes. it's stuck onto a clear protective film that covers the entire pickguard. So you just peel the whole thing off at once. If you're picky you'll pull out the pickguard screws one-by-one to get the remaining bits of film out from under them also. I just had to back 'em out a bit until I could get a pair of tweezers on the film for removal. Do Not Over Tighten! Because you'll crack the pickguard if you do.

All good advice here. I'd also add that it is hard to get the film off completely without removing the knobs. Which are held on with a setscrew. If you have the right sized wrench to remove the knobs it will be much easier. If you don't get it off under the knobs it makes a scratchy noise when you turn the knobs, but not an electronic noise that gets passed to the amp.

Back in the day when you visited a real dealer and bought an instrument they would do a pre-delivery setup and the film was removed then as a part of that. Like buying a new car with the plastic covering still on the seats and the paper mats in the floor, back a Fender dealer would do a pre-delivery prep. You got an instrument ready to go. Wow those were the days huh? Now you get a sealed box.

FUNNY STORY: Very good friend calls me from a local mom & pop music store and they have a used P-Bass he likes and wondered if he should buy it. It was cheap, almost too cheap. I got the serial and it was like 5 years old then but he said it looked brand new. I told him the price was really good and that if he didn't buy it I would be right down to get it. He bought it. He played it a few months and I saw him and asked him how the P-Bass was doing. He said, "My pickguard is tearing up!" I told him I'd check it out if he'd bring it by. He did. Nobody had ever removed the film! Film removed after over 5 years. Amazing! That stuff is tough!

Anyway it was a REALLY nice one in three color sunburst. I kept nagging him till he sold it to me for a $125 profit for himself and he bought an acoustic electric bass. I still have the one with the "tearing up" pickguard. Everybody's happy!

I have seen where the pickguard film has been left on for a very long time and when I removed it there were permanent marks on the guard from it. I guess the film broke down or the plastic of the P guard reacted to the film after such a long time.

I've heard ballads, legends, and tales about that too. They do say is not to good to leave that film on to long, or it does mess up the PG over time.

I bought a new 2004 P bass in 2012. Still had the film on it, with the S1 sticker. I had a hard time getting the film off, now the outline of the S1 sticker is still on the pick guard. Tried a few solvents to remove it to no avail. Just purchased a tort guard to replace it.

That type protective film is used on other types of products and does the same thing - leaves marks when left on too long. I have another P guard that where the round Fender sticker was- the p guard is bright white but the rest of the P guard is a dull white. It too had the film left on it too long.

Finally took the film off. What an ordeal... I broke the tip off of the screwdriver and had to run to the store and buy a new set of jewelers screwdrivers so that I could put the knobs back on. :?

Doesn't matter which way you turn it if you are using a cheap screw driver.....

You don't need a torque wrench to tighten the set screws on the knobs. A firm last twist, and then ease off. Make it look good by aligning the screws on each knob, while they are loosened, before retightening them.
