I've been looking at some Modern Player Telecaster basses online and one thing that's clear in all the pictures is that the pole pieces seem off (especially on the D & G). It appears Fender used the same pickup for both the bridge and neck.

Is this an issue?

Apparently I cannot post images to this forum (accordingly to FAQs) and I have not posted the photos online, so I best I can provide is this the link from my Google images search on "Fender Modern Player Telecaster bass":

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1231&bih=634&q=modern+player+telecaster+bass&oq=modern+player+telecaster+bass&gs_l=img.3..0j0i5j0i24.2495.7908.0.8874.29.27.0.2.2.1.227.2855.18j3j6.27.0....0...1ac.1.32.img..8.21.1355.KoBg_fzok-U&sout=0&sa=X&ei=xNLlUve8FIeFrAf6w4C4Bg&ved=0CCsQxxQoAA

My concern is the D & G on the bridge pickup. The string is consistently to the right of the pole pieces.

I see what you mean. In the all the stock images I've found it's really the bridge pickup positioning that seems a bit off. It's not just the camera angle either as I've looked at some dead on. The E & A strings are slightly above the pole pieces (screws) and the D & G strings are slightly below. However on the neck pickup everything appears to be in proper alignment. You can see it very clearly right here on Fender.com and you can hover to zoom in. http://www.fender.com/basses/telecaster-bass/modern-player-telecaster-bass-maple-fingerboard-2-color-sunburst/

Have you played one? If not you really need to get up close and personal to see and hear for yourself. I'd also read the reviews/comments at the above link.

I have not played one yet, but will do so soon. I am outside the U.S. right now, but will check one out when I get back to New York in two weeks.

Thanks for the link.

To me this was a cost-savings design flaw. The pickups are likely wound differently, but they should have been designed in different widths.

The last reviewer on the link you provided nails it and addresses this exact issue:

This is close to being a superb bass. A few minor changes by Fender and it'd be a killer. BUT... The bridge pickup is the same width as the neck pickup (I'll bet it's the same model) so the E and G strings are wider than the pole pieces. Just look at the picture above to confirm. And the two pickups are placed too far apart: the neck pu is too close to the neck and has no definition, just a Gibson boom; while the bridge pickup is so close to the bridge that it's thin and trebly.

Fender, please move the pickups closer together and into the sweet spot: you've got it right in the Jazz so just do it here. And make a wider bridge pickup. Then I'll buy it. For the moment I'm perfectly happy with my twin HB Fender Modern Player Jazz.

If the poles are off one way on the E and A and then off the other way on the D and G then they are even. One good turn deserves another- six in one hand half a dozen in the bush.

HOWEVER- in the case of that pickup on that bass AND if it is the same as the ones they used/made back in 72 or whatever it's not going to matter much anyway. Those pickups were all about bass bass bass. It's going to be bassy even if the pickup is in the other room minding it's own business.

On some basses I agree it's messed up and it is. If you bend the strings when playing you can hear the bass get loud as it goes over the pole piece. (yes it does).

There are some ways to tweek this kind of thing but sometimes you cant. A good solution is to install "rail" pickups if all is lost.

Thanks--this is very useful. I'll have to try it out.

It sounds like this would be something like my '69 Gibson EB-1, which is my "museum piece" (I never play it).
