Ended up deciding on a Fender Road Worn 50s P Bass. Ultimately, it was at the right price(about $1,000(an amount I routinely drop on gear)), with the right vibe, and most importantly, the perfect hardware for what I need. A lot of beginners would just go for whatever looks good to them(and I must admit, this one looks pretty cool), but being that I already know guitars, I know the smallest thing can have the biggest impact on tone.

They only have the sunburst in stock, but that's fine for me.

Once I buy it, I will. I am buying it along with other equipment, so I just needed to decide on a direction to go right now.

I have a Roadworn P bass. I put some Dimarzio Model Ps in it and it's a killer good bass. It compares spot on to a USA all day long. I'd never sell it. 8)

Late to the party. Fender Deluxe P Bass Special. P/J and active. $700 street. All the stock colors clash with the gold plastic pickguard in my opinion, but covers a ton of tonal territory.
