Hi,
I bought a squire p/j bass (http://www.fender.com/basses/precision- ... pic-white/) second hand and customized the body - sanded it down, dyed it and made a wood pick guard. And I really like the look and sound of the p/j.

I am looking to upgrade to a fender p/j bass but the options look wise outside of custom shop(price!!!!) are not what I'm looking for.

I'm thinking about replacing the neck and the insides of my squire so that it would 'fender' apart from the body - im not worried about re-sale etc.

Is that unwise??? thanks :)

Well if you're not worried about resale value (who really is with the Squier stuff) then go for it.

Great first post, and welcome to the forum robqwe.

Unless there is something irreparably wrong with your neck just keep it. Since you've got the body the color and condition you want, you might as well hotrod the bass. Just be aware that you'll never recover the cost of the mods.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

I'm thinking about buying a Fender unfinished Pbass PJ body from bass Parts Resources here by my house. Then I'll piece a PJ together a little at a time.

Nothing wrong with modding a Squire ....

You mean you don't like this Fender FSR P-Bass Special?

Image

The color treatments on the stock P-Bass Special model perplex me, but it is a great instrument for the money. The stock body color/pickguard color combos are odd to say the least. Unconventional at best. As funky as the above FSR looks, it actually is an improvement.

I'm not a fond of active electronics, I would pick the latest incarnation with the top-mounted jack, passive circuitry and BadAss II bridge.
