My drummer wants me to get a 5-string bass. I really do not want one. I would experience what you have described.

I do not see anything but 4 strings in my future.

Go to any huge music store and try to find a 5 string double bass, upright bass, string bass, bass fiddle, bass violin, doghouse bass, contrabass, bass viol, stand-up bass, bull fiddle etc.

You won't find one.

If 4 strings were enough for Ray Brown, Carol Kaye, Duck Dunn, Paul McCartney, Jaco Pastorius, Bootsy Collins, Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones and James L. Jamerson then 4 strings are also enough for me.

I also got pressure from other players to try a 5 string, so I bought a 5 string version of a 4 string bass I like a lot and still own. The 5 string version got sold in under a month. Hated it. Won't ever buy another 5 string. I'm sure for some people they are great but they are just not my thing.

I consider myself an electric bassist 1st, a drummer 2nd, a ukulele player 3rd and Spanish guitarist 4th. I currently have about as many ukes as basses but only 1 Spanish guitar. I can play uke better than Spanish guitar but not as good as electric bass. I also like playing stand up acoustic bass, but don't own one. For many years I played all woodwinds except flute, but not since about 1980. I have owned several electric solid body Spanish electric guitars, mostly Fender. Favorite was a Candy Apple Red Strat. I've owned several Spanish acoustic guitars. Favorite acoustic was a Yamaha FG-75 red label Japanese one that was non-electrified. I think I gave $65 for it. Right now the only Spanish guitar I have is an Alvarez acoustic electric. It's ok I guess, but I'd like my red label Japanese FG-75 back. Yes I have a guitar amp but mostly use it for electric ukulele, not guitar. It's a Peavey Blazer and it sucks for guitar but pretty good for ukulele and has a good reverb. Previously I used a Fender Princeton Reverb for solid body electric guitar. I traded it away for a bass head.

Bass only for me. I can play my friend's drums, but only for a short while. It's a stamina thing. If I could play guitar, I'd um, be playing guitar.

I consider myself first and foremost a bass player. Have been since I was 12. I do own a Gibson SG and a VOX Valvetronix amp and like messing around with the guitar. I have also played drums.

Zontar--- I think you are in fact a bass player and you won't let yourself cross into the light that you are seeking and don't know it... Just let go... let it go....and be the bass player you are meant to be. It's obvious. You post in the bass forums. You realize we (bass players) are not wanny waste sissies. You understand the brotherhood we share. We don't compete with each other and talk about pedals. We don't need no stinking PEDALS!!! Please come to the realization before it's too late and the dark side takes you Luke.... Face it. We all know you look at pictures of basses late at night.

I play bass. I've only been in one working band where I played rhythm guitar- a Guild. I played a couple songs on bass in that band.
I have 3 Strats, 1 Tele, a Kramer, a Tiesco Del Ray, a Kustom, and 2 acoustics.
Marshall 2/12 amp. I sold my Marshall stack . I never really used it.
I think I could do a good job as a rhythm player in a band. Most bassists who play 6 string could probably do that. Bass teaches good rhythm tactics I think.

Thanks for making me laugh...

But I will stick with guitarist/bassist.
I love playing chords and noodling around on guitar too much.
My guitar to bass ratio is probably about 85-15 in favour of guitar when I'm at home alone.
Although most of the time other people see me play, it's bass.

And I kind of play bass like a guitar player--some of the time.

But hey--it's fun playing bass.

Bass player first, probably because I'm so terrible on guitar

And I only took up the bass after 16 years as a drummer. I'm not anything special but I feel I really know how to keep the "groove" in the tempo because I can listen to the drums and really feel what he's playing.

My gear:
2 Musicmaster basses, one Squier, one Fender.
Fender Montara Acoustic
Squier Strat
SX short scale Jazz bass
Epiphone Acoustic
Line 6 amps for both bass and guitar.

Bass player, although I bought an Applause acoustic electric about 7 months ago. I like playing chords a little, bass is the main thing.

Bass player. I've been playing bass for over 30 years. Although I did play guitar for a couple of months when my bass was stolen. I also had 6 years of piano lessons. 8)

This is the best way I know how to answer that;
Over the years I've had a lot of guitar players tell me they can play bass. I've always answered them, "No doubt. I believe you, but the difference between me and you.....you can play bass and I'm a bass player."
I received my first guitar on my 11th birthday. I owned a few cheap guitars, both acoustic and electric. The best one I owned back then was an Electra copy of a LP. One thing is for sure. I never was any good with it.
I played around with a bass every now and then, but didn't go full time with it until I was 25. That is closing in on 35 years ago. Since the first day I committed to the bass I considered myself a bass player. I traded that Electra in on my first bass. I had, and still have, a cheap Yamaha acoustic that I played. Now days it's my grandkids jam guitar.
I currently own a MIM Strat that I play through a Peavey Vypyr amp. All kinds of sound and amp mods built in so no need for any pedals. I enjoy playing it, but I'm still not any good at it.
I will proudly admit that I am a 5 string bass player. Does a bass player NEED a 5 string? No way as brotherdave pointed out. It's just something I got use to and enjoy playing.
Peace out. :D

I'm a bass player.......now.
Have played guitar for over 30 years and Uke for around 4 years. I've taught both my kids (13 and 10) to play and they are easily better than me. (Check some of these vids if you have time)

I dabbled a little with acoustic bass last year and then got roped in to play bass for a local acoustic band with only a weeks notice. I didn't embarrass myself too much and enjoyed it so much i kept going with it. I'm now hooked and hardly play the guitar or uke. Absolutely love my little short scale Jag.

The biggest difference I find is that I can spend time noodling on guitar and uke but feel I need to have other music to play with on the bass.

I'd consider myself a bass player- I took up guitar at age 11 and studied classical & fingerpicking. I could play rhythm rock guitar well but wound up on bass at 19 as there were no bass players around. Fell in love with it! I still knock around on guitar here & there and have 6 & 7 string guitars-I knock around with classic rock on the 7 string guitars once in awhile.

It is hard for me to pin point being I love both guitar and bass so much. I started out on guitar and once I got good enough to write my own music I purchased a multi track to record it. I only got a bass because I wanted to put the bass lines down myself. When people heard the recordings to my surprise they would ask who was playing bass and that it sounded great. I then realized I might have a knack for it.

I became friends with a really good bass player who showed me how to play with my fingers and not always use a pick. He used to say (why limit yourself to one pick when god gave you 5?". He also told me he felt I was a natural bass player.

In the end I found that as a side benefit it is much easier to get gigs as a bass player if you are decent. I will never hang up the guitar and I still write music using it but I guess I am not ashamed to say I am a bass player and seem to be better known as that in my circles.

To any new bass players reading this keep at it. You will be in very high demand.

4 strings only, I tried playing 6 string but I even suck at a simple power chord. Don't get me started on drumming (left leg is primary whilst i'm right handed). I do ... sing ... If you can call it singing... Punk...

And no I don't own any 6 string related gear. I mean, my top+cab are right next to my bed and the basses hand above it.
