During the early 90's I custom ordered a G&L asat bass, beautiful trans blue with widest neck for a 4 string bass. I still have it today, but the thing is so heavy. I think the wood on it is thicker than my Les Paul. Anyhow, the place I bought it at was also a vintage guitar store. They had a 1968 telecaster bass. I played it and it was nice . But at the time I wanted a NEW bass. Now I wish I woulda got the "T" bass .
SIGH..... Oh well

I feel your pain but you are certainly not alone. I have a boatload of shoulda woulda coudas in my back pocket, as do most of us here.

Linnin, I solved the left handed bass problem back in the mid sixties. I started playing right handed. I could not afford a lefty bass, or even find a used one, period. But, in keeping with the thread, I did have a couple I wish I would have kept, even if I am a traitor to my left handedness.

Depends on when you sold the Tele. I have a 72 but the first edition is still on my hit list, and I haven't seen one for anything close to $1000, more like $3000+.

I love the original Telecaster Basss but they aren't right for everyone. The single coil pickup can hum like mad and it isn't the fastest fingering bass on earth either. Nobody would ever confuse a '68 Telecaster with "State Of The Art," even for 1968. Basically it is a Reissue of a '51 Precision. Loved mine and always on the lookout for another one. Have never liked the 2nd version with the Seth Lover pickup or the one after that with the expanded pickguard.

The '51 RI is close, but the frets and neck are different. I bought a couple of those anyway, close enough for rock and roll.

Unless the first generation P-Bass is really your thing, you'll probably find a '68 Telecaster Bass more of a curiosity than anything else. That is especially true if you are a Jazz Bass devotee. The tone sure is unique, sitting somewhere between a Jazz and a second generation P-Bass. It is a happy medium. I don't think players used to a Jazz would enjoy the Tele Bass neck much, but it is perfect for me. Dang perfect. The humbucker version has no appeal to me at all.

Note to self: Do not give Brother Dave my 72 Tele for Christmas.

There is also that nagging intonation issue with Tele basses. Only having 2 bridge saddles makes for a compromise when it comes to intonation and some can't tolerate it.

I had a chance to buy another JP90 in 2006. I passed because of the EMG's someone had installed, but shoulda bought it anyhow. Haven't seen another one since.

Indeed. I did the same thing, being left-handed. They didn't even have any lefty basses in the store. It actually makes sense to me to use your dominant hand for fretting, anyhow. The one thing I know for sure is that lefty players love to whine about the lack of left-handed instruments, though. :P Besides, left-handed guitars look kind of Bizarro world to me, anyhow. :P

I have no regrets, with not buying anything, but just getting rid of a few things, especially my Japanese 50's P-Bass reissue. That was stupid, but my worst regrets have to do with dealing other people, not guitars.

I'm a lefty-righty player too.

Ron Wood says Hendrix could play either way, equally.
