Well as soon as the Squier Bass VI is available, I'm going to get one (I already ordered one a month ago) and I'd like to get some flats for it. I've tried searching, and it seems that La Bella is the only one that makes them and they're on the pricey side (somewhere around the $70 range, but it looks like Elderly Music has them for $48, which could be a typo-I'd have to inquire about this) and available at a couple on line locations (a couple of string stores and Elderly Music.) Oh well, I should expect that since it's not exactly a common instrument. Anyway, does anyone know if there is any other flatwound options out there that aren't as expensive? Then again, I've heard that La Bella is a pretty decent brand and flats do last a long time. It's too bad that Rotosound doesn't make them, since I love that brand of flats. I have them on all my basses now.

At least the round wounds are much cheaper, and I can get them at AMS, where I mainly shop. Speaking of which, I just ordered a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass from them and it took less than two days to even get here. Talk about fast shipping!

That is a highly specialized string set. The Labella Bass VI flatwound set actually lists for over $130. Elderly always has good prices on Labella strings, usually the lowest price. That is in fact the only prepackaged flatwound set I can find right now. I know that Fender, GHS, Labella and D'Addario have all made sets for the Fender Bass VI but so far as I recall only Labella made stock flatwound sets.

The D'Addario set's low E is floppy. Users of this set sometimes replace it with a regular long scale light or ex-light bass string trimmed shorter.

Labella has a UNIQUE page you may find useful with a Bass VI or any other oddball that allows you to find a Labella custom set here:
http://www.labella.com/category/prod...ic/custom-set/

With the new Fender Pawn Shop and Squier VM issues of the Bass VI demand will be going up and possibly so will factory offerings. Fender currently offers the Super 250B6 Nickel Plated Steel Bass VI Electric Strings for about $20 retail and about $12 street. That is likely the stock string now. Fender offered a stainless set at one time, the 5350 set, but I think it is discontinued. Probably some still at neighborhood mom & pop stores.

Fender's stock roundwound Bass VI set has the super Fender Twang of surf rock and also the Bakersfield sound. I love it for that tone alone. I'd never put flats on that bass.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling this was the case. If I decide to get the flats, then I'll just get those from Elderly, then. They do have excellent prices on strings, especially if you but more then one set and have all kinds of odds and ends there. The reason I usually shop at AMS is their payment plans and good and fast service. It's so convenient to just order something and it shows up without having to even leave the house, at anytime I want to. Plus they take PayPal, which is also handy.

Yeah, I was actually looking at their website earlier today. They seem to have all kinds of stuff available. I've never tried the brand, but I've never heard anything bad about it, so I'm sure it will be worth the extra money. Besides, it's not I'd have to change them a lot, anyway. I usually like flats the best after they've been on at least a month.

That's true, too. I might not wind up using flats for it. It depends. I wish I had a Showman. I'll have to settle for my '82 Super Champ with the EV Force 10 speaker. It's funny how Fender installed a 150 watt PA speaker in an 18 watt tube combo. Hey, at least I can run bass through it without any issue. I've done it before and it doesn't sound half bad. I'll bet it would be even better with the Bass VI.

Probably whatever he felt like doing, knowing how he often did things. :P That's what I liked about him.
