I have some left over off cuts of the Sonic Barrier acoustic foam that I used to line my Rumble 75. I just custom fitted a piece to go under the strings on my Jazz bass right in front of the bridge, and man-oh-man it works perfectly!

I'm going to custom cut one for my Precision also. That's going to be a bit tricky as most of it is going to have to sit on the bridge right in front of the saddles and part on the body, so it will be a bi-level cut. It'll be skinny too as there just isn't that much room inbetween the bridge and the added p'up.

Well that turned out to be quicker & easier than I had thought. :) The foam is very dense and mutes extremely well. I put on my GruvGear FretWrap up at the nut for some additional light muting. Most Excellent! In conjunction with GHS Precision Flats, I sound like I just stepped into Motown for a session.

I also have some of the 1/2" thick foam that might work well on the bottom of a bridge cover. You'd have to measure and see if a half inch would do. The foam is backed with some pretty agressive adhesive and would stick exceedingly well to your chrome plated cover.

I cut the adhesive backing along with the composit core off the 1 1/8" foam leaving about 3/4". That worked out perfectly between body and strings. Only takes a minute to shove it under there for a tune and then very quick to remove. Which is something you can't do with a glued on mute under your bridge cover. In a studio session you could whip the bridge cover off quickly enough for a track. Not so convienient for a gig, but you could just as easily switch basses to a non-muted axe.

 If anyone wants some of the 1/2" thick foam just ask. I have enough for 10 or 20 ashtrays. 8)

Here you are adding a mute and on my old bass (Not a Fender though) I removed the foam mute and love the sound better.

Oh well, that's cool--if we all played and sounded the same it would get boring.

I like to do the Red Green method and use duct tape, instead. :P Seriously though, that sounds like something that could be useful for certain things. I already use flats on all my basses, so that's half the battle there as far as that sound goes.

It's one hell of a lot easier than palm muting. Very Purcussive Tonality. It's something you really want to have, like sex with midgets.

Where do you think would be the best place to put it on a Jazz Bass? Right up against the bridge, or in the center between the bridge and bridge pick up? Or does it matter and just experiment? I'm not so sure about midgets, though. :P

Slammed right up against the bridge is good; right; and proper whether it be the mute or the midgets.

The thing is I also like unmuted bass, so with palm muting I can have either muted or unmuted.

but I guess that depends on what kinds of music you;re playing, and other things as well.

Very True Zontar, and that's the beauty of these mutes, you slip 'em in when you need 'em and whip 'em off when you don't. Easy Peazy Lemon Squeezy!

Okay--they slip out--that makes sense.
Doubt I'd still use it--but it does allow for flexibility--which is cool.

Yesterday at work, we got a package. Inside that package was some of the best foam packing. haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will in about 15 minutes!

I've tried every possible thing and type, to mute. At present, felt is my choice. This new stuff is unique, flat on one side, egg carton on the other and it comes in one piece. Use it as one piece or pull it apart and use half.

I need to get a life.

PLEASE--- the World is a beautiful place... don't mess it up with foam mutes ! The only thing we are supposed to mute is our TV's and certain colors in oil paintings to achieve an effect. Thank you , :) don't hate.

I still think duct tape is the best choice. :P

If you have to have mutes you should get a can of that spray foam stuff and put a bridge cover on and just fill up the whole inside of that cavity untill it just starts to come out over the front of the saddles. I'm sure it would do a fine job.
