Wildinthestreets,

JP-90 is a nice bass. Your list would take me to the American Standard, but there is a bass not on your list you might want to consider. Picture a JP-90 with Kubiki electronics and you have a Prodigy.

I've never seen a Prodigy up close, but they do look nice. I shoulda put a Cowpoke on the list(or Urge Standard), too. I think they have Kubicki's.

I keep hearing that springy P bass sound on the radio.

I've a Precision Light Deluxe and an Epiphone Explorer Bass, both strung with 9050Ls.

There is an Urge and an Urge II on eBay. I know the seller personally and he can be trusted. PM me if you would like to make a connection. With the Stu Hamm Urge basses you get just about everything you could possibly want, and yet, I am not a fan. Maybe it is that battery issue, meaning my inability to remember, but they both have passive modes as well.

Thanks..but the U.S. Urge is a little rich for my blood, and I already have a medium scale bass. I just need a backup that can be converted to fretless. I'll have to stick with the pawn shops and Music Go Round, or maybe I'll find a late year price tag on a new(2013) Standard Precision(MIM). They're making those with the right stuff nowadays.

Love the Precision Lyte's too, btw.

I did a quick scan of my local haunts and did not find a JP-90 or Prodigy for sale. JP-90s seem to pop up more frequently but it is unusual not to find either. If you are not in a hurry, I'm sure one will show up on eBay before too long.

Your MIM Standard is a good choice, and a good value for the buck.

[quote="brotherdave"]Affprod is probably the number 1 forum regular when it comes to Fender quantity and quality and deserves his own button.

There also should be a Teddy Gentry button. At one time he owned more collectible caliber Fender basses than anyone I know about ever. Yes more than Affprod! LOL What Jay Leno is to vintage cars, Teddy Gentry is to vintage Fender basses. Teddy had what was actually a warehouse full at one time. However, I do not think he had the entire Performer color catalog, so score one for Affprod there!

BC Bassman might need a button.

There are also three guys from Japan that were going to every guitar show in the southeast and buying anything Fender pre-CBS. For all I know they were nationwide. I really hated it when they arrived. It sort of sucked the fun out of the place. Somewhere in Japan is one heck of a pre-CBS Fender collection that even Teddy Gentry probably couldn't touch.

I first heard about guys from Japan buying old guitars when I played in Houston in 1980.

I appreciate the posts from BD and Stroker....there was a moment there when I thought I might have a problem....an addiction of sorts, but with others collecting so many more, I now feel comfortable buying another Fender bass. Whew!

I have a bunch of Fenders but i'd rather not say how many and of what quality they are.

Just be advised that I could "use my own button"- so to speak. LOL;).

You guys are just getting started in collecting. Note that GAS is an addiction and I have it!

I have an Epi Explorer Korina AND A CASE !!!! It's dead mint hardly touched. What is yours? I've tried to sell mine for so long I just quit trying. It's a good bass. It sounds very good. I had to buy a Hamer Explorer to get the case. It's an Epiphone case. I have never spent the time to get used to the long neck on the Epi X. I'm sure I can handle it but I just always go the the P's and J's.

No problem but you have more than I do-- so maybe there IS something going on !! HA! No- I've gotten rid of a lot of mine because I wanted to have all basses that honk real good only. Yes not all Fender basses sound great. I had a 66 that was not good. Kind of a dull thud thing. My luck it belonged to Jamerson.

I still have my 1978 Precision Bass. My first bass was a Fender Coronado. :D

What's new about the Hoppus ?

The Hoppus changes colors every few years. Most recently they introduced Blonde. Only Surf Green and Fender Blonde are available now. It is rare for an Artist Series instruments to go through so many different color treatments. Daphne Blue, Black and Surf Green were the original colors. Later Black and White were the only choices. Sort of makes them more collectible because some of the colors were more limited than others. I would even say the Pink ones which were not available very long are in fact downright scarce. Also changed has been the body wood and it is now ash, but previously the body was alder. They've also changed the headstock decal around a time or two. So if you are going to collect all the variations of that model it will take up some room. I don't recommend them as a long-term investment, but they play good.

Regarding the earlier post about Heartfield, I agree that they absolutely should be counted as a Fender Bass. It is sort of like a Shoebox brand greeting card, it is still a Hallmark card, just less mainstream.
