Looks like a Lead Series guitar done as a bass.

Probably a prototype.

That would be the prototype. As far as I know the Lead Series Bass was never mass produced!

Correct, the bass was never mass produced, nor have I ever seen a prototype surface. I have not even been able to determine for a certainty, how many prototypes were produced. We do know that there were at least two, and they were not alike, but pretty much a dead end after that.

The LEAD BASS would have killed the BULLET BASS which was already a solid seller and in the same entry price class, so the decision to stick with the Bullet was sound since retooling would have meant a lot of expense to get essentially another instrument at the same price point. There really was nothing wrong with the Bullet Bass. The Lead Bass would have been slightly more expensive due the new pickup and the wiring was more labor intensive.
