Hope I can post about a Gibson Bass I saw over the weekend. I have never seen this bass before. This fella said he has owned it for a long time, and bought it used. He couldn't remember the model name, but knew it is a Gibson.
When I saw it, it reminded me of a G3? Similar body shape, and headstock. It had a soap bar pick-up, Now here's the weird part....
The pick up would slide from bridge to neck positions, or in the middle, or 2/3rds of the way or any spot in between.
Has anybody come across one of these?
Probably had a good marketing slogan when it came out, but a p/up selector knob is much more effective than having to side the pick-up back and forth while playing.
Still it was cool to check it out.

There are a few that look similar - the Grabber, the G3, and the Ripper - the Ripper was actually first. There have been some recent reissues too.

Yes, the picture link you provided looks just like it, only it was blackish. To my eye it was black with a hint of tan mixed in to make one color. It was probably black, with age to fade it some?

Sounds like the Gibson Grabber so I agree with Hieronymous. If black maybe it looked like this at one time:

The pickup really didn't move enough to make all that much difference. Some difference but not much.

They should have made it so it could move all the way up to the heel. And why does someone not make one now? :?:

SV, It's just like, why don't they make snap in, and out pups? I think the Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass had that feature. They're still around.

Yes they did have interchangeable pickups. Pretty good idea I thought at the time.

Somebody does make one like it now - Warwick! For Guy Pratt - it even has two pickups!

If it was black, then it was probably the Gibson Ripper.
