The Performer was also USA-made. It sported three pickups, 5-way switching, backrouted controls (no pickguard) and an ebony fretboard.

The Performer Elite was offered in 4 and 5-string versions.

I remember seeing a Performer Elite pic around here someplace...red, no strings...but I have never seen one for sale anywhere. That would be a very cool piece to find.

Thanks chromeface, that is the one I was remembering. Sure would be nice to come across one someday.

The Elite Performers were far expensive than their Japanese Standard counterparts: the estimated retailing price was $949.

Heartfield 5 & 6 string basses were made with 24 frets but for some reason the Heartfield 4 stringers were not?

Not true.

The DR4C sported a full 2-octave fretboard.

I get home, finally, later tonight. I will check the DR4 I have stashed.

Not all DR4s were 2-octavers, as far as I can tell.

Only the DR4C sported that feature.

Nathan East played a red pearl dust DR5 on the official PRETENDING video, interesting :o

Hey, that's my DR4!

Flight was delayed and I did not get home till early this morning. Looks like I don't have to dig mine out. Thanks chromeface!! Sorry RC, I thought I might have another trail for you.

Steve

The discontinued Steve Bailey fretted 6 also has 24 frets. Wish it was still around, would like to get another one.

Family Photo

After starting this topic a few years ago I finally got my basses together for a family photo. Despite being born in 4 different countries all these basses share 3 features. All are Fenders, have 24 frets and 4 strings. From left to right MIJ Heartfield DR4C (neck through), MIA Urge I (32" scale), MIA Urge II, MIJ Performer, MIK Jazz 24, MIM Dimension IV (original version).
My favorites are the Performers (which were way ahead of their time) and the original Dimension IV. Both well made and the Dimensions are especially sleek and lightweight. However, the Dimension basses incorporated a quick change battery cavity which is a great idea, but if the battery is placed in the wrong way the preamp can short out. Also, I have found sometimes the upper pickups can overload driving sound guys nuts. Despite these flaws, the earlier Dimension basses are definately the most comfortable to play. Don't see these become available much these days but usually are real bargains when they do!
Also, notice the headstock similarities between the Heartfield and Dimension basses. Not sure but these may be the only 2 x 2 headstock basses made by Fender?

Nice stuff Buckeye. Probably the most complete collection of 24s I have seen, knowing you have a full collection of Performers.

Just in case there are any late comers to this thread, let's make sure that all understand there was never a production Performer produced in the USA. While planned, and even included in a catalog, the Elite Performer is vapor.

Question, what do you think the pluses and minuses of playing a full two octave bass are?

Best,
Steve
