I am interested in building my own bass. Does anyone know a good site on information or does anyone know the measurements for all of the pieces?

I just helped a friend build a fretless Precision. I sourced him all his parts and helped him with assembly. So, let me know what info you need and I'll be glad to help. Measuring and mounting the bridge is probably the toughest part of the job.

The scale length is 34". After you select a bridge (the Gotohs are nice, but there are tons of bass bridges out there, at AllParts and other parts houses), measure the 34" from the inside edge of the nut to the center of your saddles (also centered in the bridge). This will give you forward and back adjustability of your saddles. Also, if you're planning to use the chrome bridge cap beware of the Badass bridges, they don't fit under the caps.

Then, clamp the bridge with a hardware store clamp (with rubber protectors on it) to the correct length. Then string the bridge with a set of old strings, and position the alignment. It helps to put a piece of masking tape perpendicular to the body, marking the correct bridge length position. The last bass body I worked with was center joined, and the join just happened to be DEAD-CENTER, but if it's a painted body, you'll need to sight the side-to-side alignment. I don't know of any more scientific way to make this measurement, but there may be one I'm not aware of. It does help to have another bass to use as reference.

I will say the project we did came-out perfect, so the approach seemed to work fine. If you want to make the bridge mounting easier, search out a body that's pre-drilled for the bridge. Many aftermarket bodies come this way. Then just be sure the bridge you choose is for that drilling (ie vintage
Fender bridge drilling, as that's what most pre-drilled bodies are drilled for).

That's the best I can offer. Hope that helps.

PJ
