I bought a new Stu Hamm Urge bass.
It's easily the best bass I've ever owned.

But I noticed an electrical issue:
When I'm NOT touching the strings, there's an electrical static buzz, which gets much worse when I touch a pickup post.
However, when I AM touching the strings or instrument cable output, everything is fine....I can touch a pickup and there's nothing but silence.
When I AM touching the strings, there is also a faint yet noticeable electrical buzz when I play a note.

It's not the ground lead to the bridge (I used a volt meter to check continuity between my bridge and the output jack...it is continuous).
I changed the battery too.

Is this normal?
Are the electronics/pickups really "noisy" on this instrument?

As it is currently, it's not useable for studio work.

PS, I love Fender.

Hey Sandman,
Yeah it's a real bummer.
Such a great bass....actually, the PERFECT bass for me.
Nice and light, balances well, sounds great, feels great, 2 octaves...everything anyone would ever want.
If only you could use the damn thing!
Mine is unuseable for anything that's going to get recorded, or when I need a really clean signal.
Oh well

Yeah it does suck!!

The bass is a dream to play, but that constant buzzing is crazy. I can't believe Fender would allow this to pass quality control? Theirs no way they designed it to be this noisy and if they did, why?

Hopefully we'll get an answer to this issue sooner than later from either someone who has had this issue before and found out what the cause was and fixed it, or from Fender themselves.

Either way, their has to be an answer!!!!!!

Subscribing, as mine does the same thing. Regardless of pickup settings. Turning down the highs does mute most of it.

I think someone at Fender should check these posts out. Obviously their seems to be a general issues with the Urge bass in regards to this noise issue.

Well it looks like I'll be gutting mine and going with after market pickups and preamp to try and shut this sucker up. I've tried other things, but nothing has worked thus far!

What brand of pickups are you thinking of putting in there?

Let us know how you fixed the problem.
Thanks.

It'll probably Basslines or something along that line. However, I'm not sure if it's the pickups or the electronics. I really think the issue is the circuit board and I'm looking at replacing it first with a Bart system if at all possible. It has to have the same functions it has now and it's got to fit as well, (no modes in the wood please and thank you!).

Either way I'll keep you posted.

Update,

I have taken mine in to a well known guitar tech in my area to see whether or not he can find the answer to this buzzing issue. I'm hoping it'll be an easy fix, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Update!!

Well I got the bass back and it still has the same issues as before. The tech I took it to said that it's more than like a bad electrically component somewhere in the signal chain, but was unable to diagnose which one. So I'm really no further ahead here. It's looking more and more like I'll have to go with aftermarket stuff to try and shut this thing up.

It's pretty disappointing to say the least :( .

Is their nobody checking these post out?

thats a shame.

My passive J bass buzzes quite a lot when I got the tone right up with my bedroom lights on (they have a big transformer) but when I turn them off the buzzing goes away almost totally. You sure interference from other electrical objects isn't the cause?

Well after much though, and I mean much thought!, I decided to part with my noisy Stu Hamm Urge 2 bass about a month ago.

I loved the bass, but got no responses from Fender in regards to the noise issues and I was not willing to spend another couple of hundred dollars trying to get the thing to shut up by replacing all the circuitry and pickups on it.

I see that they have upgraded the 2008 models with new circuitry and so on, hmm kind of makes you wonder don't it!!
