I'm tempted to try these. Gonna try cleaning with rubbing alcohol first. I always either wash my hands then put rubbing alcohol on them, or I've been using hand cleaning wipes from CVS for gigs. But eventually the strings go dead, especially if it's hot and I'm sweating a lot.

Even coated strings die out over time. I've been thinking of using Bass Brites on my GHS Precision Flats to keep them gunk free and seasoned with whatever synthetic lube they must use in their formula. I'm just wondering if WD-40 on a rag would do just as well. Hmmmmmm..... :?

Rubbing alcohol isn't good because it contains water. Use DENATURED alcohol instead. No water!

The system on this page works and is reusable over and over. Used it for over 3 years now:
http://www.tunemybass.com/strings/bass_string_cleaning_tube.html

Two cautions. It is poisonous so don't drink it. It is extremely flammable.

Well, didn't see this until after I used rubbing alcohol. Didn't do much - time to change the strings! It felt like time anyway.

Thanks for the hint on denatured alcohol - might have to keep an eye out for that. Still think I might try the Bass Brights if I get around to it.

I realized how bad my strings were (more so the guitar strings, then the bass strings-those seem to corrode more) when I finally changed them the other day. The E and B strings on my guitar were actually black. I won't be letting them go that long anymore, since I can get them easy by ordering from AMS. There definitely is a big difference in tone and feel, especially with quality brands. Rotosound flats for the bass and Ernie Ball Slinkys for the guitar. I finally found the brands that make me happy at a reasonable price. They sound good to me, and feel nice. What else do you need? Well, maybe a guitar tech to change them for you. :P

By the way, that reminds me, I REALLY need to get a string winder. I fully understand that other post now about strings changing themselves. It has been a few years, so I forgot about what a pain in the arse it is to do that, especially with a guitar. It takes so long to hand crank those things around the posts, while trying to hold the string down tight on the headstock so it doesn't look like a sloppy mess.

I've never tried any of those cleaners. The most I've ever done was use a cloth. I have tried using Pledge on the guitar before, which was kind of a bad idea in the fact it made it kind of greasy feeling. The guitar that is. :P

I have not tried them. Clean hands is a good start if you want to extent the harmonic content of
round-wound strings. Lastly, wipe them down with a clean towel when your done.

On a similar subject...

I stumbled upon a video on YouTube for a 2 minute antidote to bring round-wound bass strings back to life without the use of chemicals, boiling, or whatever method you use to rejuvenate the strings. Plus, you don't have to remove the strings. It seems silly, but for most circumstances it actually works. Not exactly the same as new, but a VAST improvement.

Here is the link titled: How to get NEW bass strings in 2 minutes! Super bass tip by MarloweDK
