If I play out doors in 100 degree heat for two or three gigs- I need to change them. Indoor gigs after about 4 or 5 gigs they need changed. So that's outdoors 9 hours-- Indoors 15 to 20 hours. AND I wipe down my axe after every jig. I feel the need to have the very best tone I can get all the time SO I change strings. If I played bass I would never tell anyone that I never change my strings. That to me is like saying "Hey I'm a lazy $@! and don't give a @#%& so let's get drunk". :D Sorry that's just how I feel about it. I'm going all L innen and whatnot. I'd actually hang out with Linnen if he lived down the street. Same thing with Oxfan. :D

This has been a really interesting and insightful thread, and I thank everyone for your input.

I have outdoor gigs the next two weekends, though not 100 degrees. I am going to play my AV57P for both, I think. I think the strings might be losing it, finally. November it will be year, but six months of gigging or practice. But after those two gigs they are coming off either way.

I am beginning to believe it is true that flats last longer, but I have pushed these strings past my point of my confidence, even if they are still fine.

Who was it that said strings should just change themselves? It isn't even the effort as much as the break in period I hate. IMO flats break in very quickly while rounds take a while, but I had that period where they just suck. Muting helps, thanks BD, but I still dislike that time.

I think I am going to keep on with old habits, but I am going to add some time on those with Fender flats. I cannot play a bass as much as I have the 57 without changing strings because it is working on my mind, I am constantly worried about the strings, and for the cost of Fender 9050s, it is not worth it.

I have decided to stay with the Fender flats, pending the outcome of my Black Diamond trials as it would be nice to give the local company some business. On rounds I still do not have a clue. Still using EB SS while trying out others. Maybe I will give Mr. Nylon a call.

Thanks again for all the great input.

Steve

I am deeply honored, stroker vance. I do indeed live just down the street. It's just a very long street. Be sure to pick up Oxfan on your way over. :)

Well, I've had the Rotosound flats on my bass for over a month now and I must say I really like the brand. I had to tweak the neck a little because these were a little heavier than the last strings I had on there and I was getting some bowing action. It's all good now, though. I will say they seem rather stiff feeling (that's what she said :P ) when I first put them on and played them for the first few times. It could be because of the fact I haven't used flats in several years and I wasn't used to the feeling of them and the fact that they are heavier gauge then I was using, too. Now, they are broke in, so it's all good. 8)

On the guitar front, I've been using Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10-46's and I'm really digging those for the guitars. I got a new Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom guitar that still has the factory strings on it, so I'm going to put the Ernie Ball's on that, as well. I don't know what strings they use (probably Fender's I'm sure,) but to be honest, I'm not happy with the feel of them. By the way, that Squier is a sweet guitar. I know a lot of people are brand snobs and like to bash them, but that's doesn't matter to me.

So: Rotosound 77 45-105's for bass; Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10-46's for guitar. I'm all set now. No need to worry about that, at least.

Okay- we're on the way. Can you set a fire in the driveway so I can tell which house it is?

Done! I collected up all the fake Fenders that show up here all the time and torched 'em. Wow! They made quite a bonfire. You should be able to see it from the international space station.

I'm on the road again..... We packed up the car with three basses ( one each) and headed down to my favorite hills and grotto. Nothing but bass player cd's in the car... Tony Levin, Enthwhistles solo album (which I used to have) etc.. some lefty bass from L... it were all good at the campfire till Susquatch started to bogart the basses . He always does that.
