My son is small for his age, but he plays a Mustang Bass and loves it. He wants more of a slap/popping tone, and so we decided to get an EMG P pickup for it. I haven't installed it yet. I know I will have to modify at least the pickguard, and I don't know whether there'll be room for the 9-volt battery in the cavity as it is now.

I will also be installing an EMG-EXB tone control to go with the new pickup. It's a single tone control that, when turned all the way up, cranks the lows and highs while reducing the mids, supposedly great for slap tone (according to EMG). Does anyone have any experience with this equipment/modification?

If it all works out, he should end up with a short-scale, active bass with great slap tone, and a lot more tonal versatility than he has now.

I'll post the results of our mod here.

The mod went very well. There were some serious modifications to be made though. First, the pickguard had to be re-cut for the EMG P to fit. Also, the body cavity had to be routed for the pickup, as well as a place for the 9-volt battery. I also had to get some help from the EMG tech because I was wiring an EXB bass expander tone control along with the new pickup.

The result was great. The bass sounds like another instrument, and my son is loving it. He says the first things he notices is the response of the EMG is immediate. And the bass expander tone control was well worth the $48 extra.

The tone is way different. The bottom end really booms, and the highs are crisp. It's actually too bright with the tone control all the way up. Not bad for a short scale 4-string bass.

Before I had my EMGs intalled, I thought my amp made the bass sound good. After the EMGs were on, I couldn't believe how good the amp and the bass sounded. EMG makes great product. It fit's the music I play - NYHC, Metal, Hard Rock, some Funk. So yeah, I agree with your son how great these active pickups are. My bass was equipped w/actives stock. The EMG made it that much better. Congrats.

PS. My Urge - Stu Hamm sig series I was short scale active pups too. I loved that.
