Need a 1971 MUSICMASTER BASS WIRING SCHEMATIC. This is slightly different from the MM guitar diagram and from a p-bass diagram because I think I recall there is a treble bleed cap in addition to the ceramic disc 0.05uf tone cap. So it has 2 tone caps I think. Maybe dreamed it but I think it did. All you Musicmaster Bass freaks check it for me. This is for a friend who has one with no pots, but otherwise complete. If you have it on PDF or a scan email it to me please? PM for the email address if you have one. Thanks!

If you can just check your wiring and let me know if your Fender Musicmaster bass has 1 or two caps on the tone pot that will help us too.

Look at page 37 of this document (in German):

http://www.riverband.demon.nl/Schakelingen_passief.pdf

There is a diagram without the value of the second cap.

I am not sure how accurate the schematics are. I found them on talkbass.com.

TON H, That is exactly IT! At least in general. THANKS!

I meant to get on here last night and post that I got the correct diagram yesterday afternoon from Fender. I neglected to do so. I compared the one Jeff Bielke at Fender Consumer Relations sent to the one at the comprehensive link you posted and it is essentially the same. Mr. Bielke also sent the spec sheet, parts list and all documents they had on file regarding the Musicmaster. So my friend is all set!

After no real diagram got posted in the thread I sent an email to Consumer Relations yesterday afternoon expecting it would be a week or more if I actually ever heard anything at all. To my amazement I got a reply within like an hour with everything they had on it! Now that is service!

The link you posted is an excellent resource. I really enjoyed looking at it and will surely use it in the future. The various schemes on the first generation P-Bass will be fun to explore. That is a very comprehensive wiring diagram site.

In the diagram on the German site the missing value of the treble bleed cap in their diagram is a 200V 0.022uf poly. The 0.05uf cap is specifically the same 50v ceramic disc Fender used on most of their instruments. This exact same 0.022uf cap was also being used, at least at one time, in the Jazz Bass because I've seen them there also and should be easy to find. On the official Fender diagram the ground is not wired, but conducted through the aluminum foil shielding applied to the pickguard which is not exactly the best way to do it and advised my friend to wire the ground anyway as on the link you posted and not to depend on the shield to conduct the ground. Many parts Fender used on the Musicmaster came from other Fender instruments, so it is easy to find most of the parts.

On this 1977 one, everything was there but the components in the control cavity, yhe knobs and the nut was broken. The pickguard is in awful shape. The nut has already been replaced.

I've delved further into the project and learned this one is likely a 1977 model based on the 8 digit neck code dating to Friday July 22, 1977 and the 6 digit pickup code dating to June 13th through 17th 1977 (made by winder 11 whoever that was and if anyone knows that would be good info too.) The rest of the electronics are gone, so no pot codes. It is rough to say the least and possibly was abandoned for decades.

So, this one is in the kind of shape you'd possibly consider parting out, but all the hardware is there and if one threw enough dollars and time at it then it will live and breathe as a player. About $70 in parts plus refinishing will get it going. The headstock decal is an issue to be dealt with as is awfully ugly now. Apparently it was stolen a very long time ago, some parts removed, the serial obliterated along with the "Fender" part of the headstock decal, the finish sanded off the body including the stampings in the neck pocket and the control electronics and knobs taken for some unknown project. It was found abandoned, apparently for many many years and is untraceable since the serial is gone. Even if the serial was entered as a stolen item it would have been purged by now as they only maintain them for 13 months at the most. It will never be collectible but as a player parts bass there is a chance to restore it to make it a player.

Thanks for your help, that link will be helpful on many projects, not just this one my long distance friend has decided to do.

Brother Dave,

You're welcome, I am glad I could help you.

I saw this file on talkbass.com about year ago and checked the schematics of the precision elite which were not correct. So I send the German guy who made the file a PM to help him. I didn't know how to post the file on the Fender forum so I put it on my own website (space).

Do you have pictures of this bass? We are all interested :)

Yes they sent me some photos. Not much to see though. Trust me they are pretty rough. Just imagine a stripped body, a chewed up headstock decal and a nasty looking pickguard.

The bass belongs to someone else and it is their project. I'm involved only as a long distance adviser. I'd hate to publish the " before" pics and not be able to publish the "after" pics having no control over whether they send any more pics or not.

I sent the Fender provided docs Friday evening and 48 hrs later haven't heard one word back so don't know if I ever will since they got what they needed.

Heard back. They said they would send photos as it progresses. Who or how it will be refinished is still up in the air. It might be a while.

That MMbass is a project for sure, but i have seen worse.
You have part of a HS decal,+
The neck has the original tuners +
You have the original bridge!!+++
The finish was cleanly stripped from the body, leaving it pretty smooth.
The neck pocket still has the original finish overspray, so you know it was a white bass and that is an easy color to duplicate.

Spray it with a good sanding sealer, but some white spray paint from reranch finishes or just your hardware store if you want to save some $$.
Paint that sucker white and let it dry.

Look - You buy two 250K pots with splined shafts. like for a Stratocaster, and then buy your favorite caps depending how original you want it to appear. Wire it up and buy a neck plate, some black strat knobs and put it together.

I'll bet it plays great as soon as you string it up!

YES BC that is pretty much what I'm thinking that I would do and have advised the same other than I was going to go Sea Foam Green with white pearloid guard and new hs decal. Other than the control cavity electronics and the decal it is all there. I figure it was stolen at some point which is why the headstock decal got buffed off and the paint stripped.

Even though not pictured, have the original black knobs also. I have that photo but forgot to post it.

That will drop dead gorgeous in Sea Foam Green. That and Daphne Blue are my two favorites. I've never seen one SFG and am looking forward to future pics.

That looks good! If done properly it will be a beauty!
