Knowing that you are a huge fan of five strings, Fenton convinced fender to make a special one just for guys like you.

Uh, I was the last one to buy a new bass, Bebe, and right around what you'll spend for the new Jag!

We 5 stringers owe alot to Fenton. Of course if he had his way we would be playing 4 1/2 string basses..... :? ......think 5 string banjo......

Anyway, I would have to try one of the Jaguars before I would buy. There is a Fender dealer about 35 miles north of here that stocks a few Squiers. I'll check in with them every now and then to see if they get one in.

If they sound or play close to the PJ Deluxe I checked out at GC a few weeks back....it would be hard not to buy one.

ROAD TRIP!

Hmmm, sounds like a good excuse to spend some time with Nice Lady, have a relaxing drive, a nice dinner and a research trip.

Holy cow! Look at this! You can just buy one for what you'd spend in gas and dinner!

 WOW

:D $249.99 :D

I thought they would run $50 to $75 more than that. Those should sell easy at that price!

Seen that done somewhere on something......can't remember where or what! :?

Seriously. I really have to wonder about a $249.00 bass guitar. Granted, this is an "entry level" instrument, but really.

Okay, seriously....not much fun, but okay.

Same thought here. I thought they would run about the same as my VM, $329.99. That's pretty cheap for a 5 string and they are really good basses.......for that price.

I still would like to check one out. I'm sure they play and sound better than $249.99, but how much better?

Have not and will not try the 5 string Squier Jaguar. I just can't get past 4 strings. I figure I never saw a 5 string upright, so why would I need one? I bought a really nice 5 string version of a 4 string bass I really love. I hated that 5 string. I mean HATED it. Just didn't see the point of it and it screwed my mind and I couldn't play it. Total waste of money.

I can tell you though that the 4 string Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special (list $330/street $200) in 34" scale is the best $200 four string bass on the market. It plays great, sounds good, is light and just feels good and very Fenderish. Corners were cut on some things like a really thin pickguard that comes practically pre-warped for you. I'm also sure the metal hardware isn't up to MIM level either, but it beats the snot out of the Ibanez GSR200 which is the only halfway decent competition at $200 street for an active. The Squier plays better, feels better, balances better and sounds better than the Ibanez. I think the Ibanez finishing is fantastic, however the GSR200 electronics sound much less robust. The Squier is a real active bass for $200. I was blown away totally. I don't know how they did it for that. Seriously how? I would own one. But right now the last thing I need is another bass. But if I was looking for a backup or a first bass and didn't want to blow a bundle that Jag would be a real enticing bass. Other than the pickguard being really thin and the hardware being dubious it needs nothing! I could buy one and gig it right off the rack. When the pickguard peels off I could replace it easily and as the hardware broke I would replace it with MIM stuff. I wouldn't have to change anything in the electronics at all! Neck good, frets good, controls good, preamp good, pickups good. I played 3 different ones just to make sure. All 3 were better than just OK.

This is the one with the P/J that has the standard single Jazz pickup, not the humbucker stack at the bridge. I didn't like that one as much myself. I'd take the regular P/J over the one with the stacked pickup. I like the Sunburst and the Red one. Be aware that the body wood varies on these. The black ones are agathis and the rest are basswood. I'm a sucker for basswood because it has bass in its name. Seriously though I do like basswood bodied basses better than agathis. I have ash, alder, agathis and basswood basses. I prefer ash or basswood and between those two it is a tossup. Basswood has incredible resonance but is balsa wood light and prone to ding easily. Ash is snappy-snappy bright but has some depth and is far more durable. So it is a tie and they each have their place in tonal quality analysis. I'm not a big agathis fan.

Thanks brotherdave for your insight into the world of "cheap" Fender basses.

I can't say anything about any of those basses execpt for the Squier VM V that I own. If they are anything like it, they are surprisingly good and I don't know how Fender sells them so cheap either.
I did modify the electronics in mine, but I'll be the first to admit it wasn't really necessary. There was really nothing wrong with the original sound. Just my personal preference for a sound the original electronics didn't provide.
I paid $305 for the Squier VM. I've put approx $150 in it. That's a total of $450. JMHO, but I don't think there's a 5 string in that price range on the market that can come close to the playability or sound.

So if these Jaguars are as good as my VM or the previous Jaguar 4 strings, they will probably surprise alot of people. Hopefully I'll get to check one out and if I do I'll let you guys know what I think.
