Fender got it right in the early 90's with the introduction of the Stu Hamm signature bass called the Urge. The original Urge basses were 32" scale, active/passive, stacked pickup knobs, toggle switch and a control knob. If you couldn't find a sound that worked for your taste then the control knob also has a position to turn the bass off.

I was able to recently complete my collection of Urge 1 basses (4 colors). The bass in the center is one of a handful of prototypes made personally for Stu Hamm. He signed the pick guard on this one which was finished in a special gray burst color.

There was also an Urge Standard which was MIM. Had two Jazz Bass pickups and a more simplified circuit, lacking off the middle split humbucker pickup and complex switching.

Some sported a side-mounted jack while others were featured with a top-mounted socket.

One of the prototypes was fitted with factory-installed EMGs, supposedly a one-off build.

Yeah, the MIM was almost a quasi jazz. I have played one quite a bit as it was owned by a friend who would ask me to sit in when I stopped by, I mean it was okay, but I am not sure why it was issued as it stands, unless it was just to have an inexpensive bass with the Stu Hamm signature.

The Urges were discontinued in 2010 as Stuart moved to the Washburn camp the following year.

"Chester" and "Fred" were never put into production.

Both basses were built by Todd Krause.

One of those Urge prototypes (nicknamed "Larry") is tuned for piccolo.

Stu Hamm..he looks like my POD/current events teacher from 20 years ago. Personally, I like stewed 'maters and stewed onions 'n beans. Pork chop!

Love the Stu Hamm URGE I Bass. I got this new when they first came out in the early 90's. Great playing fast bass.

Oh yeah, I remember those basses! I use to play on one occasionally that a guitarist had that I was in a band with. Nice instrument, indeed. 8) I remember it was the same color as tafilmer's and yes, it was a fast bass. Very punchy. It's too bad they don't make those anymore, amongst other models. I know it was a signature model, but they could have worked around that like Peavey did with the EVH stuff. Maybe it wasn't feasible, I suppose.

Apparently Stuart was not happy from his deal with Washburn and joined the Warwick roster in 2014.

Yeah, I noticed that in the music gear press somewhere. Bootsy Collins did that too, years ago. He had some Washburn deal and then went to Warwick, although his lasted a lot longer than the Stu Hamm thing.

Steve Bailey went to Warwick in 2011 after spending 2 years with Fender-almost 3 years before Stuart endorse the German company's flagship Streamers.

Prior to Fender and Warwick Steve endorsed Ibanez, Aria and Michael Kelly basses, with the former finding a burst of popularity in the hands of Carol Kaye and Victor Wooten.

I remember the model Carol Kaye has. I played one in a shop once. Pretty beefy instrument.
