I must admit that I have been intrigued by GruvGear's Fretwraps ever since I first found out about them.

http://www.gruvgear.com/fretwraps

Creative muting for your bass at the nut is a fascinating concept that I've been wanting to try. For some wacked out reason GruvGear only sells their fretwraps in three packs for $30. So when they offered a single special for July, I pounced!

They are well designed and made. Thickly padded with a soft terrycloth cover on a black elastic exterior band with velcro closure. Fits very snuggly, and doesn't 'travel' while the bass is being played.

The amount of muting is light. It does reduce some undesired tones, but it also cuts a slight bit of sustain. Fretwraps strike me as something more useful for recording than live work. Still I'm glad I have one.

When you play on the first fret such as the F on the E string the fretwrap is not really in the way but you do notice it's presence. Some will find that unacceptably annoying and rip it off the bass and toss it away cursing. I've almost become acustomed to its presence.

This doesn't take the place of muting the strings at the bridge at all. For a bit heavier muting use in conjunction with a bridge mute. If you're looking wring out every last bit of purcussiveness from a flat strung Precision, I'd definitely use a fretwrap and a foam bridge mute together. I like the fretwrap on my round strung Jazz. Especially when playing agressively with a pick. My slap technique sucks, but I like the fretwrap for slap also.

Playing with a thin rag in you left hand is cheaper and it does mute nicely. I saw a guy who played that way a long time ago . It really wasn't bad. I guess you could play with those cat burgler gloves also. That would be nice I bet. You could also put a thin rubber band around the neck.

Ah! My Great Uncle Linguini! What a forward thinker he was. While everyone else was content with round pasta, he invents the flat.

Were they made in Mexico at Fender's Ensenada facility?
