Hi !

I'm very interested in the American Vintage '62 Jaguar in Olympic White.

But can't find definitive answer about the body finish (Varnish)...

Some say it's Nitro (I love Nitro), some say Polyurethane (Or any new material), some other says it's Poly with Nitro on top.
Everything I read is different...

The neck seems to be Nitro for sure. But what is the truth about the body finish ?

Thank you very much

Ps : There's no "discontinued products" section on Fender website ??

There is no legacy model section on the Fender.com site, but maybe there should be. Pretty sure there are at least two reasons why they decided not to do that. 1. People would get confused and think they were still available. 2. Certain discontinued models Fender marketing had rather forget about. Just thought of a third reason, there are so many. I'm more interested in seeing an update in the diagrams updated with current models as they haven't been updated in ages.

I think these have the vintage brown cases. The instruments with the vintage brown cases as a general rule are nitro ones in the USA Vintage series.

The top color layer being nitro will only provide a long term tonal benefit if the primer/sealer is also nitro. That isn't stated on any of the specs for instruments touted at being "nitro." So don't be naive and assume it will be "better" just because it has a nitro finish. Maybe and maybe not. Also, people neglect that nitro not only lets moisture out, but lets it in too since it does not have a miraculous one-way valve built into the paint. Poly has advantages too, which is why automakers switched to it and Fender followed them.

thanks (as always) brotherdave. 8)

this is a pretty long thread, but I did answer the "nitro" questions on the new Vintage Reissues and gave a bit of explanation beginning I think around pg 9.
hope it helps.

Cool ! Thanks ! Where did you find this ?

Yeah sure ! That's probably stupid because I discovered all that finish stuff since a very few time !
I own a Gibson Custom with nitro on it, and I think it looks "smoother", feel different than polyester finishes (But maybe I'm crazy, I'm not experimented enough)

I didn't even know it was a nitro finish, I found out when doing researches at first I was like "Oh $@!&, that will be a pain in the $@!..." but now I love taking care of it etc...

So now I know for sure, yes the American Vintage is 100% Nitro. And why a thin skin ? And not a regular one ?

Thanks to both of you :D

Hi,

You've posted your topic in the bass guitars section.

Go to the All Other Fender Guitars discussion lounge and start a new thread there.
