Okay, I am excited. And I don't get this excited very often. I do not have this bass, but I own this bass. It is in route from George Gruhn where I had it for authentication. I will post pics on Thursday when it arrives...but in the meantime I thought it might be fun to ask.

What the heck is this?

Brother Dave helped me evaluate this bass, so Dave, you are ineligible! LOL!

It's a Precision Bass! What do I win?

Is it a 1960 that sat in the sun a lot?

Awww, come on.

Oxfan, you are correct, it is a Precision Bass and your prize is in the mail, two weeks ago.

Dalembic, you know your decals. It is a 63. But no, it wasn't in the sun too long. What is your next guess? This is where it gets fun!

I've never seen that finish. Was it made for a rock and roll band's bassist? Maybe a country guy?

Now you have the idea. The finish is a one off, special red sunburst. I have been dealing on this bass for several months but could not pull the trigger because I could not validate the finish. Finally, the seller agreed as part of the sale to send it over to George Gruhn for an in hand evaluation/authentication and it checked out.

As to whether is was made for a star, Fender has no record. In my discussions with them they could not find where this finish had ever been made nor where they had taken any special orders in 63. They suggested I approach it with caution. However when George looked at it he was sure it was a factory finish, even the marking "spec. red" in the neck pocket had the "S" under the indent, so it was there first.

So the finish is good, but we can only speculate on how it came to be. It was pointed out, that at this same point in time, Gibson was playing with this color combo. Maybe Leo wanted to see what it looked like on a P? Maybe it was a prototype and he (and George?) spent some time looking at it, deciding whether or not to produce it. Maybe someone did request it, but a large marker used on the back of the neck leans more to a prototype.

George completes his written report by saying "this is a very rare bass".

It has been a long time (if ever) that I have been this excited over a bass. As I told Brother Dave during the evaluation, it is the most beautiful bass I have ever seen. Colors hit everyone different, but this combo hits me right in the gut. I love it.

I will post pics tomorrow in the Precision section once I have it in my hands. The clock is moving slowly.

Steve

There's an amazing amount of knowledge on here about past designs, finishes, locations, etc.

Me? I'd never heard of a short scale bass until I was given my first Musicmaster in it's ignored and neglected state.

Love that color scheme.

I'm exited just over the pics of this thing.

Maybe this one-off inspired the Sienna Sunburst finishes from the early 80's(?).
