Nice to be here.

I wonder if somebody help.
I have a Jaguar bass, Chinese made which is not recording very well.
The culprit is on the open A string which appears to rattle and make double notes
almost harmonic like (quite subtle but it's there)
I thought it was pickup distortion at first but you can hear it when not plugged in.
I've checked all over the guitar as much as I can and cant identify where it's coming from.

Thanks for any help,
Mike

It could be your truss rod being too lose. If so, just slowly turn it clockwise until it's snug.

It may also be the spring behind the A string's saddle being loose.

It could be your A string being too low to the frets, with the metal hitting metal...causing harmonics.

Also..if your action happens to be very high, and you play close to the bridge...people sometimes get harmonics with your right hand bouncing off the strings that way.

Another possibility is the A string isn't wrapped around the tuning peg correctly. Take it loose and re-do it, maybe.

You can always try fretwraps from Gruv Gear

http://www.gruvgear.com/fretwraps

I've not tried them, but they are interesting. Has anyone here tried them?

Get two full windings of string around the post. No slippage there.

Is the nut slot too large? Maybe the string is moving around in the nut - especially if it is only the open A and not the A at the 5th fret on the E string...

Thanks for the help everyone.
In the end I put new flatwounds on, adjusted the truss rod and action.
Also made sure there was enough windings to push the string down at the nut and it plays great, no buzz or rattle.
BTW, expensive those flatwounds but sounds nice and solid.
Cheers,
Mike
