There hasn't been a new post on this board for awhile so I thought it might be fun to post a picture of a bass from my collection, just for the fun of identifying and discussing it. If this is enjoyable, let me know and I will post others anytime the "All Other Fender Bass Guitars" board goes without new topic for awhile.

So "What the Heck is This?"

Wasn't that a fender katana?

Nice call.

The following is from Fender:

Katana Bass (1985-1986). Squier’s short-lived Katana Bass was released concurrently with Fender’s equally short-lived Katana guitar of 1985-1986. The genesis of both came with the mid-1980s rise of hair metal, during which Fender jumped on the pointy-guitars bandwagon with perhaps the most extraordinarily non-traditional models the company has ever made. Like the Fender and budget Squier Katana guitar models, the Katana Bass was built in Japan and named for that nation’s traditional samurai sword, with an asymmetrical V-shaped body, arrow-shaped headstock and the additional unusual distinction of a medium (32”) scale length. Although actually quite well built, the Katana instruments were not successful, and it didn’t help that they arrived during one of the most tumultuous periods in Fender history. Katana guitar and bass models lasted barely a year; all were gone by late 1986.

You win!

Steve

Another point of interest is the oridion of the line. It was first created by Fenton Farnjsworth, an independent designer who brought his designs to Fender, who promptly stole them. After an attempt to bring legal action, Farnjsworth settled out of court, for 12 sets of Fender bass strings, a Fender stool and a subscription to National Geographic.

Information provided by stroker vance. Thanks Fletch!

Not many people know that Oxfan, glad you posted it. Fenton filed a similar suit with another 85-86 one hit wonder bass that we will discuss another time. I understand he has switched to nylon strings.

It's really sad, Fenton had the worst case of A.D.D. ever. His attention span was so short he would just wander away. the last time he did, he's never been seen since.

Actually, I heard that Fenton was recently seen with Elvis. They were in a BBQ joint in Bubbatown, Tennessee. Elvis was eating the pulled pounder with slaw and a side of fried okra. Fenton was alternately looking at the menu, jamming on his Katana, using the restroom, talking about extraterrestrials with the cook, and staring the Hendrix black velvet day-glo painting hanging on the wall.

Wow! You've described Fenton so well it's remarkable. This definitely was a legitimate sighting. There's a rumor that he's here on the Forums! i don't want to say for sure until I'm positive, as soon as i know I'll let you know.

I saw him at Wal- Mart. He had on a ratty khaki T shirt, "slept in" blue plaid swets and pink bedroom slippers. It was odd that I could tell him from all the other people there.

I like Wal-Mart

Very bizzarre bass and an enjoyable thread even if I missed out on being the first to say it was a Katana.

Thanx for a good read. :D
