Well since nobody has replied I thought I'd post my pitiful neglected gig rig. I just don't use it much any more. I think it was last used a year ago this past January. I just carry a small combo most places now, even outdoors. I'm old and I'm lazy.

The rack top to bottom is a Furman power conditioner, Fender RT1000 tuner and Ampeg head. The cabs are an Avatar DELTA 2x10 on top and Avatar NEO 115 on bottom. That rack weighs more than either cab I think. It was always too loud wherever I took it when coupled with the PA.

Well the 51 RI has been deep-sixed but had a real long run. The STING P-Bass is still out there and really is the same instrument except for the signature inlay. I understand Guitar Center had some new 51 RI's left last week but just a few. They were selling them at a good price.

They are very solid instruments but significantly different in tone and feel from a 2nd generation P-Bass. The tone is like something between a Jazz and a 2nd generation P-Bass with a bolder feel to the neck.

The Squier Classic Vibe 50's version is a first rate instrument and the Lake Placid Blue on those is amazing. For a long time they were only available in LPB. They recently added the Butterscotch color with an aged see-through effect that is much prettier to me than the Fender 51 RI Butterscotch. I still like the LPB better myself though. I like some of the more modern features on the Squier version such as the four saddle bridge a lot and would not change them back. The pickup on the Squier version is also fine and I would not upgrade it at all. It really is a good buy and you can gig it right out of the box after checking that the setup is ok for you. I wish they had incorporated medium jumbo frets into the updated features, but instead it has the vintage style frets like the Fender 51 RI and Sting basses. While those frets do have some advantages soundwise such as almost fretless sounding slides and a marvelous feel, they do wear quicker if you use roundwound strings. Therefore I suggest taking the stock roundwounds off ASAP and replacing with flatwounds. But that change to flatwounds is the only change I'd make out of the box. It is my favorite Squier passive bass and I think it is a steal.

If you run across one give it a try and compare it side by side to the other Fender bass types. It isn't for everyone or every style, but it is one of my favorite Fender Bass designs.

Squier does make quality products a lot of people bad mouth em but if you get their high end models they are as good as fenders low end models
